Amon

"I staggered on trembling limbs across the beach, the wreckage of our galley behind me. The clouds parted and I beheld a city on a great cliff cutting into the sea like a runeknife into flesh. A dozen alabaster towers shone from the height, a beacon of hope. And I thought I beheld the Overhall."   Wulfgar the Wanderer, journal   Overview:
Amon is a small city in the far south of the Holmgardian Empire renowned for its beauty and higher learning. Perched on a massive cliff jutting into Sea of Blades, it contains numerous towers dating back over a millennia. Atop the cliffs, the city is watered by Loch Morath, a glimmering lake fed from underground springs. The lake gives rise to a stream which waters the numerous olive groves and vineyards in the surrounding countryside. Amon is the home of two of the three institutes of learning in the entire realm: the College of Lore, and the Imperial College of Wizards (the only other institute being the College of Bullfyrd).    Politically, Amon is a part of the southern province of Tesenheim, the most populous region of the Empire. Amoners, like other inhabitants of the southern Empire, are intensely proud and only grudgingly acknowledge Imperial authority. Rather than openly rebel, the burgomasters and scholars of the city spread dangerous ideas and foreign ideologies through their liberal education of bards and magic-users. Despite it's uneasy relationship with the Holmgardians, no Emperor has ever dared to raze the city, fearing the strength of its walls and wizards.

Guilds and Factions

Amon is home to the College of Lore, which educates bards and scholars, and the Imperial College of Wizards. These two institutions, located across the street from each other, have such an intense rivalry that street battles between students are not unheard of. Regardless of their mutual disdain, they produce the vast majority of scholarly output in the Holmgardian Empire. Thanks to this culture of education, the literacy rate of Amon is a staggering 75%, at least ten times higher than the Imperial average.   Three churches jostle for religious primacy in Amon. On the upper tier, the cult of Mystra reigns supreme. Mystra is a relatively obscure god worshipped by spellcasters who believe that she grants magical power. Her remit is arcane knowledge, lore, and mystery. The lower tier is divided into Tyr worshippers, most of whom live in the neighborhood of Neuberg and worship at the Temple of St. Thorn, and Kelemvor worshippers, who mostly live in the affluent area of Lochberg. In Amon, Tyrians are a minority - something that the Inquisition has been trying to change for centuries.    Lastly, the Burgher's guild manages the merchants of the White Sun Bazaar, where all manner of esoteric artifacts can be found.
