Twenty Years War
Lengthy war between Savinn and Brugund that took place in the seventh century of the New Empire. The spark for the war was the death of King Fillin III of Savinn. Fillin left no male heir, only a young daughter, the Princess Edin. By Savinn's laws, the crown could not pass to a woman. Fillin had two siblings - an older sister, Maun, married to Hansig, King of Brugund and a deceased younger brother, Peyr, married to Ursul, Countess of Plessin. According to the succession laws in Brugund (and most of the Empire), the throne of Savinn would pass to Maun and Hansig's son Hefsenn. However, by Savinnese law, inheritance could not pass through a woman, making Peyr's infant son Gwill the rightful claimant.
Countess Ursul (rumoured by some to be a sorceress) moved quickly to ally with important Savinnese nobles (notably the Counts of Ansbakken and Vadinz) and install her son on the throne. King Hansig invaded Savinn to press his son's claim. A third faction supported the claim of Princess Edin.
The war lasted for almost twenty years and ended with the marriage of King Gwill to his cousin Princess Edin, and the defeat of the Brugundian forces (and the death of Hefsenn) at the Battle of Aiems.
