Riverkeep

Government

Riverkeep is governed by Burgravine Phera Leighey, who oversees the town’s territory as part of her broader responsibilities within Ebonfalls. She ensures that Riverkeep complies with Ebonfalls' and Setran policies while managing trade and taxation. Local governance is handled by Mayor Lysdora Thranken, a female dwarf sorcerer known for her inventive mind and pragmatic approach to leadership. Together, they maintain a balance between the region's economic needs and its obligations to Setra, with Burgravine Phera providing distant oversight and Mayor Thranken addressing the immediate concerns of the people. This dual leadership ensures stability but occasionally leads to friction between local and regional priorities.

Description

Riverkeep is a bustling logging town nestled along the banks of the Monttane River, with the expansive Verending Forest lying just to its south. Its buildings are a harmonious blend of sturdy stone foundations and finely crafted wooden structures, reflecting the town’s Sweylean roots and reliance on timber. Steeply sloped roofs and intricate carvings adorn many homes and workshops, showcasing the skill of Riverkeep’s artisans. The central Riverbend Square and the Timberweave Market serve as lively hubs of commerce, drawing traders from across the region. The town’s economy revolves around its lumber yard, which processes timber for trade with nearby settlements, making Riverkeep a vital resource hub within the Kingdom of Setra. Despite its industrious atmosphere, the town retains a rustic charm, with the river flowing serenely through its heart, a reminder of the natural bounty that sustains it.

History of Riverkeep

Founding of Riverkeep (2553 RR):

Riverkeep was founded by Corvin Leighey, a settler from the Free States of Sweyle, who sought to establish a new life along the Monttane River. Initially a small village, Riverkeep was built to take advantage of the abundant timber in the nearby Verending Forest. Over time, other settlers joined Corvin, and the village began to thrive as a logging hub.

Expansion and Orc Raids (2555-2600 RR):

As Riverkeep’s logging operations expanded deeper into the Verending Forest, it provoked frequent raids from orc tribes dwelling in the Forested Peaks. These attacks led to the construction of defensive palisades and early fortifications around the village. During this period, Berenike Ferray, seeking to ensure regional food security, led a group of settlers north to establish the village of Whitmaw on the shores of Kearrath Loch, creating a sister settlement that would become a key partner and rival to Riverkeep.

Construction of the Great Mont Bridge (2604 RR):

To facilitate trade and connect both sides of the Monttane River, Riverkeep constructed the Great Mont Bridge (Mid Bridge). This monumental stone bridge was a turning point in the town’s growth, enabling efficient transport of goods and people across the river. As the bridge was completed, settlers from both Whitmaw and Riverkeep ventured eastward, seeking new opportunities to establish settlements of their own. However, the project also left the town temporarily vulnerable to further orc attacks due to workforce shortages.

The Shifting Gale and the Orc Wars (2610 RR):

The year 2610 RR saw the arrival of migrants from the Free States of Sweyle, escorted by the mercenary company The Shifting Gale, led by the renowned paladin Ragra Zerkana, a devout follower of Avandra, Goddess of Change and Luck. These settlers sought refuge and new opportunities in Riverkeep, fleeing conflicts in their homeland. Their arrival bolstered the town’s population and provided much-needed labor for its expanding industries. However, their hope for a new beginning was quickly tested by an intensifying threat.
The orc leader Vruzak One-Eye, a fearsome warrior and devout follower of Gruumsh, God of Destruction, united the scattered orc tribes of the Forested Peaks under his command. Inspired by Gruumsh’s teachings of chaos and ruin, Vruzak led a series of coordinated raids against Riverkeep, targeting its lumber yards and defenses. His attacks were more organized and devastating than any the town had previously faced, pushing Riverkeep’s militia to its limits.
The Shifting Gale, renowned for their tactical expertise and inspired by Ragra’s faith in Avandra, confronted Vruzak and his forces in a decisive battle near the outskirts of the Verending Forest. Ragra Zerkana personally challenged Vruzak in single combat, defeating the orc leader and scattering his followers. With their leader slain, the orc tribes fell into disarray, and the raids subsided, granting Riverkeep a much-needed reprieve.
In gratitude for The Shifting Gale’s heroism and the blessings of Avandra, the townsfolk constructed the Shrine of Lady Luck, dedicated to the goddess, as a symbol of hope and resilience. The migrants who arrived during this time played a crucial role in rebuilding and fortifying the town, further cementing Riverkeep’s reputation as a thriving and resilient community.

The Rise of Ebonfalls (2671 RR):

Riverkeep became part of the City-State of Ebonfalls, uniting the Broken Valley settlements under one banner. This alliance brought increased trade opportunities and resources, solidifying Riverkeep’s role as a key lumber supplier for the region.

Annexation by Setra (185 GW):

The annexation of Ebonfalls by the Kingdom of Setra marked a new chapter for Riverkeep. While the town benefited from increased trade and security, the annexation also brought tension, with some residents resistant to Setran rule. Nationalist sentiments occasionally flare up, reflecting Riverkeep’s Sweylean roots.

The Orc Attacks of 196 GW:

The year 196 GW brought a mysterious calamity to Riverkeep: the Monttane River inexplicably dried up, disrupting trade, halting the lumber industry, and leaving the town vulnerable. Concerned about the river’s sudden disappearance, Riverkeep hired the adventuring group Fool’s Errant to investigate the cause. While Fool’s Errant delved into the mystery, orc tribes from the Forested Peaks seized the opportunity to launch a devastating raid.
The orcs targeted Riverkeep’s lumber yard, striking with brutal efficiency. They killed many workers, looted food and valuable resources, and vanished into the wilderness before the militia could mount an effective defense. The raid, though limited in scope, dealt a significant blow to Riverkeep’s economy and morale.
In response, the town appealed to the Kingdom of Setra for aid. Markgraf Schneller dispatched a company of Landsknechts, led by the female dwarf Captain Uaiccar, to fortify Riverkeep and establish the outpost Forest Peak on a nearby hill. Recognizing the need to locate the orc base, Captain Uaiccar tasked the mercenary company Bannervale with scouting the Forested Peaks while Fool’s Errant continued their investigation.
Bannervale’s scouts uncovered alarming intelligence: the orc tribes were migrating in large groups, possibly consolidating their forces under a new leader. They also reported the presence of lesser dragons that had taken roost on one of the peaks in the Forested Peaks, further complicating the region’s stability and posing a new threat to the surrounding settlements.
After destroying the magical dam in the Shadow Forest and restoring the river, Fool’s Errant returned to Riverkeep. Upon learning of the orc raid and Bannervale’s discoveries, they joined the mercenary company in the Forested Peaks. However, their mission took an unexpected turn when they were accosted by the lesser dragons, which turned out to be mounts for a group of knights called the Order of the Silver Vale. These knights, to the group’s astonishment, were orcs themselves. The knights took Fool’s Errant to their leader, Emeri, Silver Soul, who revealed the order’s origins in the Kurath Mountains, a distant range far west of the Free States of Sweyle.
Emeri explained that she and her knights had already destroyed the orc warbands of Gruumsh in the region, preventing further attacks on Riverkeep. However, even with the orc threat eliminated, Emeri and her knights refused to leave the Forested Peaks, citing their ongoing mission to guard against future dangers. Their continued presence caused significant unrest in Riverkeep and Forest Peak, with many viewing the knights with suspicion due to their orcish heritage and enigmatic motives.
This event is remembered as a time of great hardship and unexpected revelations, highlighting the enduring dangers posed by the orc tribes, the mysteries of the Forested Peaks, and the broader conflicts shaping the region.
