Qualifications
You must be appointed a princess by the Queen of Equestria, in order to be worthy you must do a monumental discovery/sacrifice related to friendship.
Requirements
You must be worthy and the Queen must love you like a daughter.

There is a princess crowning.
Duties
You must look after everyone, you must also take part in events and royal openings for events. You must be in charge of royal festivals and hold speeches.
Twilight, as the princess of friendship, goes to the friendship trade to oversee that everything is a fair trade. She must also spread her knowledge of friendship to everyone.
Luna and Celestia must oversee that the day and night cycle is not interuppted.
Cadence is the ruler of The Crystal Empire so she makes sure that the love heart stays strong.
Responsibilities
Luna must make sure everypony in Equestria is sound asleep with peaceful dreams, if someone has a nightmare she pops in to look after them.
Celestia raises the sun and makes sure everyone feels loved and has everything they need as well as look after her students in the canterlot magic school.
Accoutrements & Equipment
All royalty wear crowns symbolizing the role they represent, although Twilight Sparkle feels uncoftorble as princess and often doesnt wear her crown becuase of this.
Grounds for Removal/Dismissal
If they are horrible and mean to everyone and threaten the ponies existence.
History
The first alicorn princesses were appointed royalty by the great unicorn Starswirl the bearded, the ponies he selected were the unicorns Celestia and her little sister Luna.
They lived peacefully as rulers for many centuries until Luna felt disrespected by her older sister and subjects and turned into Nightmare Moon. Becuase she had threatened to turn equestria into total darkness, Celestia used the elements of Harmony and banished her to a thousand years on the moon.
While Luna was away, Celestia appointed a young Pegasus ,named Cadence, the princess of family, she later became the princess of the Crystal Empire.
When Luna returned her status as the princess of the Night returned to her and things continued smoothly.
Twilight Sparkle became the next unicorn to become a princess, she completed a star swirl the bearded spell with the magic of friendship which gave her the title, the princess of friendship.
Many years later, Princess Luna and Celestia retired their roles as the princesses of the land and crowned Twilight Sparkle the new princess of Equestria, where she will be in charge of both sun and moon.
Princess Cadence has a baby called Flurry Heart who will oneday be in charge of the Crystal Empire and the princess of Hope.
