Terror of the Cove Depths

The journal of an amateur party of explorers was first uncovered on the cove of Thelrend, tattered and soaked. The writer was one Venjyo Mijuhu, and his friends Kijaun Gaol, Hugara Gaol, and another unnamed. It was transcribed and used for educational books on the dangers of Thelrend's waters, as before the explorers, mermaids were unknown things.

Journal Entry:

15th of Laroune, Year 52 SA   I want to leave, don't look back and get out of this dreary place. We lost Kijaun to the mermaids, they dragged him into the murky depths. Our own lives were in just as much danger, but Oysus* granted [us mercy and we barely got]1 away. The mermaids are alluring and appeared so innocent, their eyes were filled with just as much child-like wonder and curiosity of us than we were of them. Hugara was the most sensible and warned his brother, but he threw caution to the wind and held out a hand. It was all so sudden, the mermaid's eyes revealed its malice and snagged Kijaun's arm, tugging him into the waters whilst the other mermaids lunging for us.   [...]2   Hugara wants to go back and save his brother, [...]3 agrees. We had an argument, they were both furious at me for leaving Kijaun behind, refusing to understand that I was being the reasonable one here! But of course, it was two against one, and we plan to go back and find Kijaun an hour from now after we've properly prepared. I really [doubt he'd still be alive,]4 yet they insist on it. They keep spinning up crazy theories about the mermaid's motives, trying [...]5         Translator's Notes:

1. 4. Due to the original source's condition, most of the writing is smudged or lost, therefore gaps were filled by the transcribers with assumptions of what would be most likely written.
2. A paragraph between the first and last is missing due to the ink being faded beyond recognition. The journal was uncovered bent in the middle, leaving a thin pool of water to stay across the center.
3. We assume this to be a fourth member of the party, however his name is too smudged to discern or make a concrete conclusion. The letters of ".am..." were all that we can confirm.
5. The remaining sentence is incomprehensible and the bottom of the page has been torn. We have been unable to find it. It can be assumed the group went back to the mermaid's dwelling and perished, as the journal wouldn't have been left where it was otherwise.
