Wall Clock

"Your favourite thing at home?" He echoes the question, "it's the clock on the wall at home."
"Describe it to me" I press, "if you are who you say you are, you know what it looks like."
"It's been a while since I saw it, I've been away for many years." He stammers, "the case is wooden, carved with flowers, leaves and animals. They have been painted so they look almost real, you catch sight of it out of the corner of your eye and you can almost swear they are moving, prowling in the forest or shifting in the breaze."
"Go on."
"The face is so complex you can hardly read it if you do not know how, it has several concentric circles in it's face that each shift and turn in their own ways." He explains, "the innermost dial lists the days of the week. The next has the small numbers that show the date. Then is the dial that shows the month, the font is so small you have to get up really close to see it but it is there. They move independantly, you can read that by the line up in a marked slot which tells you the correct date."
I sit down in shock, but nod to get him to continue.
"The stationary ring tells the time, marked like any other clock and read by its hands." He continues, making the shape with his hands to better explain. "But your favourite part, the most beautiful piece, is the outermost circle which marks the phases of the moon. It is made of brass, and the signs for the phases are made of mother-of-pearl and jet cut so perfectly that they fit seamlessly. You used to love running your finger over them to try and find the join, but you never could." He finishes and we sit in silence for a moment.
"Thank you" I say, standing up and leaving the room. There I sink to the floor by the door and start sobbing from my complex emotions.

These moving hands and faces are run by a system of tiny cogs, to Tesha's amazement, it somehow always keeps to the right time. When it does occassionally slip, it it easily resolved by its creator.
