Chief
Qualifications
The respect of the people of an island is the only qualification needed to take the title. Most often it is given to a son of the previous chief, his father will often oversee his education so he should be a skilled diplomat and up to the task of running the island.
Requirements
The holder must be the son of a previous chief or decended in the male line from a past chief, daughters and those decended in the female line are barred from inheriting the title.
Appointment
This varies from island to island but the main symbol of appointment is the taking of the Sword of Office which is the marker of the chief.
Duties
They oversee the day-to-day running of their community, making sure that food is sufficent for all and welcoming all visitors to their island as well as visiting other islands and securing alliences through the marriages of their children.
Accoutrements & Equipment
They carry the Sword of Office for their respective island when participating in official business but beyond that they dress the same as any other islander.
Grounds for Removal/Dismissal
The people can remove the chief through a vote at the island parliment. With a two-thirds majority a chief can be removed and another one apointed in his place.
Cultural Significance
In the islands of The Chain they are well respected by their people when they govern well.
On the mainland, where the people are often viewed as wild barbarians, their power is not respected.

Sovereignty lies with the people of each island who allow the chief to rule over them.
Length of Term
It is a lifelong position following the death or resignation of the previous holder but it can be renounced or taken away.
