Brindol Settlement in Eotha | World Anvil

Brindol

Brindol is the largest city west of Dennovar until you reach the settlements on the western coast of Nythlaang. Brindol is the only fortified city in the Elsir Vale and it's fortifications provide a significant obstacle for anyone attempting to use the Dawn Way to traverse the vale.

Demographics

Brindol is a nation composed of mostly humans and halflings, dwarves also make up a large number of its inhabitants.

Government

Brindol is ruled by Lord Jarmaath, the Earl of Brindol. The city state is run by a council of Lords but the settlement itself is Lord Jarmaath's sovereign territory.

Defences

The city of Brindol is surrounded by a fifteen foot thick, twenty foot high wall. While the castle itself was situated on a significant rise, the surrounding city was not. As such the walls of Brindol are vulnerable from almost every approach save the river itself and so machicolations and crenelations run the entire length of the wall. The greatest weakness that Brindol faces is the sheer length of wall that will need defending during an assault. To combat this, Lord Jarmaath has ordered volunteers to begin digging a moat along the eastern and western lengths of the wall and intends to flood these moats from the Elsir River should the Red Hand reach the walls of Brindol. Brindol Castle includes a bailey that encompasses the keep along with the Cathedral of Saint Vraldrad the Founder with many of the castle defences built into the cathedral.

Infrastructure

The Dawn Way, an ancient dwarven road that connects the eastern and western coasts of Nythlaang is the lifeblood of Brindol and Dennovar providing ample trade and profit.

Assets

Brindol is a relatively self sufficient city-state able to glean anything it needs through taxation on the trade that passes through it's boundaries.

Guilds and Factions

House Jarmaath - the Ruling House of the city of Brindol, Jarmaath controls the chair of the Triumvirate of Brindol that control the city-state. House Kaal - one of the Triumvirate of Brindol, House Kaal controls most of the mercantile interested in and surrounding Brindol - they have land to the south-west of Brindol, likely already overrun by the horde. House Haskinar - one of the Triumvirate of Brindol, the lords of Haskinar control most of the agricultural enterprises in or around Brindol.

Architecture

Almost all the quality stone close to Brindol was used in the construction of it's walls and the keep. Accordingly most of the other structures are made of wood and mortar. The city has a tudor-like feel to it's buildings and most houses have thatched roofs or wooden shingles.

Geography

Brindol Keep and its inner bailey sit atop a rise just to the west of the Elsir River. When the castle was created the dwarven bridges over the river already existed and the lord of Brindol had little problem attaching gatehouses to the bridges and exacting tolls for those who passed through. Over time the city grew up around the keep and spread out from the raised keep into the surrounding flat lands. Past hobgoblin raids made a previously lord place a wall around the city which has since been expanded. Bridal's walls are strong, but were never really intended for a full military siege.
