Militas

Militias is centered in the south of the Eorldom of Gar and guards the Mil river crossing and the March Trail. The town is currently administered by Serr Eamon Barsim of Militas, the cousin of Eorl Llion Barsim. The guilds have also elected a Stermix, Greum Maoliosa , who represents the citizens and provides jugdement on the day to day issues. Only when a ruling or any civil dispute having a value over 1 Dragon is required will Serr Barism be required to provide judgement.   Is a stone walled Town on raised earthen works with a stone motte an d bailey inside the town walls   Population: 2,300 normal/market days +200- 500/harvest festival +900, 50-300 pilgrims largely closer to Caer Militas or outside the town walls.   Liege Lord: Sir Eamon Barsim   Resources: trade route, stone, wood charcoal, spiritual shrine.   With 371 families, 309 freemen and 62 peasants.   Within the domain of the town there are: 15 blacksmiths, 15 woodcrafters, 6 weaponsmiths, 6 armourers, 12 foresters, 9 masons, 12 inns and 9 taverns as well as other guilds and artisans.   The church or Urto has Archbishop Sayer Baynton and 2 Bishops. The College of Light is administered by Principal Heath Guerrero and has several magic users in residence who provide teaching.   The town has 50 guards/Lokeiss and can be called upon to provide 64 Spearmen, 24 Archers and 12 cavalrymen. The B’rants household consists of 36 servants and Serr Eamon Barsim does not have a warband/Pleivink.   The area immediately surrounding the town is lightly grassed but with large amounts of bracken. Not overly fertile but hardy crops are possible. Many of the local farmers use a unique breed of sheep that eats the base of the Braken and tends to keep it from overtaking other crops.   Militas has a population of 2,300 people growing to over 3,000 during the major seasonal festivals and over 2,700 during the monthly markets. There are always anywhere from 50 to 300 pilgrims that are attending the shrine but these are not usually staying in the town but in the area surrounding the Caer Militas.   The stone walls of Militas rise from earthen berms and Castle Barsim rises again on a motte in the north western section of the town. The stone for the walls and the buildings of Militas comes from the village Sintar which is up river from Militas. Sintar can be reached via a trail through the Jar Forest yet despite the constant traffic and patrols by the local militias (Nixeiss in Urtish) this should only be attempted by well armed adventurous individuals or by joining one of the frequent caravans. Most people use the river ferry which provides frequent daily trips back and forth to the village; you may just need to ride on top of stone blocks on the return trip.   The town of Militias consists of several neighbourhoods: Freiritay (the area close to the motte and castle), Eznix (dockside), Taytreit (Top town), Golashnix and Dolantnix (east and west town), the area west of the town and down river which the locals refer to as Barigagru (Bad Air) and the toll bridge river crossing which is called Eitein. NOTE: many of the districts have cook shops or carts where food can be had for a reasonable cost.

Districts

Freiritay

Is where Seer Barsim’s motte and castle is located and where many of the well to do have their homes. Both the Urto temple and the College of Light are located in the south east corner of this neighbourhood. People who should not be here are quickly asked to leave by the town guards who patrol this area Freirtay has the following businesses: 2 Apothecaries, 1 Physician, 1 engraver of the Goldsmiths guild, a barber, a money lender and a blacksmith. There is also a tavern and an inn frequented by the noble people. There are also rumours of a nobles-only brothel.

Eznix

As the locals call the dockside area, contains many of the merchants' shops and warehouses. Obviously the docks are also home to the fisherman and where they process their daily catch. On many sunny days the fisherman have their drying racks filled with fish which some of the locals object to. The docks are also home to the town's shipwright where both river boats and sea capable ships are built. There is a backlog so depending on the size of craft needed it may be as much as a year to receive it (cash up front for 50% of the final value).   Militas' docks are always full of small river boats used for fishing and simple merchant traffic. The ferry service both up and down the river is consistent and runs most days. The two largest boats are owned by the Order of the Chalice which are normally docked at the order's wharf. There is a Shrine to Celetan located on the wharf as well. Sailors are known to leave offerings at the shrine before they head out to sea.   Eznix has the following businesses: a barrel wright, 2 masons (one has a large yard filled with stone by the docks), cloth merchant, a couple shopkeepers. There is a brothel however it has no fixed location since the city guards continually raid the location once it is well known. Numerous rooming houses for labourers and low income families. There is an inn as you come through the towers guarding the bridge over the Mil river, and a tavern by the docks. There are regular salt boats that carry salt from the villages in the Gar peninsula to Militas

Taytreit (Top town)

Located near the northern gate is the industrial neighbourhood of the town which contains many of the blacksmiths, weaponsmiths and armourers. Many of the town’s artisans and crafts shops are located here ranging from woodcrafters, furniture, pottery, apothecaries, and alchemists. Some of these are located elsewhere in town however they tend to be the higher end shops and artisans. There are some townhomes here where people live above the shops (second or third story) and rent here is mid range. In addition outside the North gate is where the seasonal and monthly market stalls are set up.   Tayteirt is home to the following: Armourers guild headquarters, 6 weaponsmiths, 6 armourers, and a foundry specializing in brass and bronze castings (bells and boat fittings mostly), 2 cartwrights, 2 glass blowers, 2 blacksmiths (one that specializes in cart fittings), a barber adjacent to the market square, a butcher (adjacent to the market square), and a clothmaker. There is also an inn (by the March Walk gate) and 2 taverns.

Golashnix

Is located near the Aldanor trail gate and is sandwiched between Taytreit and Eznix. Golashnix has Market street on its northern border and Saint’s Way on its west and Merchant street on its south. The Stermix’s administrative building and his manourhouse are located here across the Saint’s Way from the Urto Temple. The heart of the town’s civilian government. Many of the town’s bakeries, clothiers and cobblers have shops in this area. Again there are shops in other parts of the town however they will tend to be the higher cost shops. There are also townhomes here but they tend to be rentals that are mid range in cost and on the 2nd and 3rd floors of the shops.   Golashnix has the following: 2 masons, a Cabinet maker of good furniture, 2 carpenters, Entertainers guild, Thieves guild (located behind a bakery), 7 bakeries, a barber who tends to many of the guild leaders, a blacksmith by the eastern gate and a blacksmith who provides the special needs of the artisans of the town, a butcher, a cloth maker, several cobblers, harness maker, 2 leather workers, 2 shops, 3 tailors, 2 tinkers, an Inn by the east gate and another on Saint’s Way, 4 taverns (one across the street from the Market square, another in the ‘sprawl’, the others are on Saints Way and Baker’s street.

Dolantnix

Is located south of the Hero’s walk across from Freiritay. Many of the Guild masters and some of the guild headquarters are located here as well as many of the high end shops and merchants. The town's Fraen hospital is in Dolantnix as well as some of the doctors have shops here.   Dolantix has the following: a mason and a carpenter who builds most of the noble houses in town, an excellent furniture maker who exports to other towns and out of the eorldom, a cloth merchant who has imported cloths, goldsmith, a physician, Perfumery, a physician, several scribes who work on administrative documents, a bakery of fine desserts and breads, a blacksmith by the western gate, a butcher of fine meats, two cobblers of fine footwear, harness maker for the nobles, leather worker of exceptional skills, 2 money lenders, 2 shops, 2 tailors of find clothing, a tinker of fine goods and 3 wine merchants. Guildhalls: Carpenters, Masons, Clothiers, Scribes, and Entertainers. There is an inn just inside the Eastern gate and 2 taverns

Barigagru

is just west of the Maks gate and down river from Militas, are located the tanneries and cloth dye industry. This is also where the slaughter yards are. The wind traditionally blows from the south or east so the smell rarely gets into the town, despite this the people of Militas do call this part of town Barigagru (Bad Air) and with good reason. Every morning there is a line up at the Maks gate with carts loaded with meat heading to the town’s numerous butcher shops and cooks.

Points of interest

Badger’s Tooth, owned by Clive Eatone, located close to the market in Taytreit, fair prices and largely clean rooms. Attracts people from the market including farmers before they head home at the end of their day. Saintly Inn, owned by Haralda Whittlee, located on the Saint’s Way, is frequented by those with money and wanting to keep apart from others. Generous rooms with excellent stables. Many of the well to do Merchants stay here or just outside the Northern gates at The Full Flagon operated by Haralda’s competitor Dudley Averille. Both run similar style places with identical pricing and services.   Located in Freiritay the March Hawk, owned by Irvette Read, is the place to be seen and stay when petitioning anyone of nobility in Militas. The dining room and attached tavern has numerous private rooms for all types of liaisons. Irvette is very discrete and so are her staff and clientele. The food is exceptional, and the wine and beer are well above average in quality and in price. The guards at the door are discrete but force full when needed.   Blue Rose Inn is located just inside the eastern gate in Golashnix. Owned and operated by Edric Thornee for over 35 years and he took over from his father. The place is used by the mid to lower class. Its not a rooming house per se but there are several bunk rooms that out of work merchants guards use. The food is average as are the drinks. Rates are below average. Edric makes his money in volume and quickly removes individuals who cannot pay.   The two taverns in the Dolantnix are owned by the same person, Serr Eamon Barsim  the cousin of the Eorl Barsim. This is not well known as he is a silent partner. The Sword and Scripture is closest to the Church of Urtis and tends to be low key place. Everly Rey, the operator of this tavern ensures that the clergy and workers looking for contracts with the church are welcome. Prices are above average, and food and drinks are average in quality. There are several private rooms, and many tables have curtains to prevent easily seeing who is at each table.   Everly has connections with the Thieves guild and provides many rumours and even provides connections to patrons needing specialized services. Eamon Barsim is completely unaware of any of this.   The other tavern owned by Eamon Barsim is the Bard and Poet, which is frequented by the freeman and well to do artisans. It has a singing and poetry contest alternating every weekend. Ælfsige Airòi runs a tight ship and ensures the guests enjoy themselves. He also provides a venue for the talented entertainers of the Eorldom of Gar and will bring in people from as far away as Leon and even Jaronne. There is a large stage in the great room and a smaller stage in the upstairs area. Seating over 100 people with standing room for another 60 this is the largest and most well attended place in Militas.
