Freeman / Stenix and Yoemen / Steras

In Urtind, Freeman are called Stenix and Yeoman are called Steras and are the middle class of the Tribe. Sternix / Freemen as the name implies are free of any feudal obligations and own their land and have full rights to it. Stenix are however required to pay taxes to the local lord. Some Stenix may even be owners of Manors.

Stenix also includes artisans, artists and merchants who through their skills can become famous and rich (or poor and destitute). Their education is focused on their trade skills and artistic abilities. The status of a stenix is hereditary but their wealth is based on their talents. Steras are stenix in paid service of the lord or in some other administrative position. Stenix status requires the taxes to be paid in full and on time. Within the Badger tribe these are not onerous. Included in these taxes is the exclusion from service in the militia, and any work associated with the lord’s manorial holdings. In most cases it also includes the right to limited hunting within the lord’s forests. Failure to pay taxes can result in judicial punishments up to and including the application of bondage (reverting to a serf).
