Borobog Beastslayer

Borobog was born to one of the older families in free orc society. His family line is no doubt filled with stories of heroes and legends but it would be impossible to know as free orcs do not keep family records. Free orcs do not even burden themselves with last names, the accomplishments and status of ones family is meaningless when measuring the worth of an individual. Borobog was taught the ways of his people as are all children. He learned the basics of individual combat but most importantly he was taught the core principle of why free orcs live their lives as they do. Borobog became nearly fanatical about these believes, committing hard to the idea that individuals must prove themselves to gain value and should allow no one to look down on them.   These beliefs led to Borobog prospering in his lessons, landing him head and shoulders above his peers. It was when Borobog was nearly 18 and done with his studies that tragedy struck. The largest Gortar in free orc history had wandered too close to the town and had begun rampaging through the north east of the village. The current chieftain of the free orcs, Hogar the Attuned, grabbed the Staff of Chiefs and left with his trusted guard to deal with the beast. The people were evacuated from that section the city and a great battle commenced. Hours passed and most of the village remained huddled near the center of town awaiting the return of their leader. When it became clear the chief would not be returning, Borobog volunteered to investigate. He was the fastest in his class and claimed he would merely be investigating but in his heart he knew it was the glory that he sought. He knew he would return a hero or not at all.   With thin leather armor, armed with nothing but his axe he began his journey to face the beast. Tracking the site of the battle was not difficult, he merely followed the smoke in the distance to the burning block of the city. His heart was racing as he approached but this excitement only made it worse when his heart sank. The ground was littered with a dozen orcs, bloodied from being gored or crushed to death. Near the bodies he saw the Staff of Chiefs resting on the floor but Hogar was nowhere to be seen. It was only when Borobog rounded the corner that he saw the body of the chief. Hogar had become an ornament adorning the greater tusk of the gigantic gortar. Borobog had accompanied hunts in the past but this gortar had to be ten feet taller and twice as heavy as any gortar he had ever seen. While Hogar's body was brutally impaled upon the beast's horn it was clear he gave as good as he got. The gortar was so bloodied it was shocking the beast was still alive. It thrashed weakly yet could not move as its left two legs were frozen in place, no doubt due to magic cast by the chief.   Borobog approached the now pathetic beast. It let out a weak but still intimidating snort from its nostrils before giving one last feeble pull on its icy restraints. Borobog sighed in resign as he raised his axe to fell the beast, there would be no glory for him today. He put the beast out of its misery, picked up the chief's staff, and headed back to the town center. The tribe was saddened to see the chief's staff as it confirmed his death, however it was overshadowed by their elation over the legendary deed that was accomplished by the young Borobog. His name was cheered in the streets and the city granted him the moniker of "Beastslayer".   Borobog wanted to correct them but so overwhelmed by the people's reaction to his return. It was everything he ever wanted, the praise, the glory, all for a lie. No, not a lie, he did no such thing. He slayed the beast, he avenged the chief, what does it matter the nature of the kill? His lie did no harm to his people but instead gave them a heroic figure to look up to, it was what his people needed Borobog decided.   When the question of who should become the next chief it was decided it would be the orc who avenged their last leader, Borobog Beastslayer. He humbly accepted and was bestowed the Staff of Chiefs that he had held once before. This staff would haunt Borobog throughout his career as chief, a constant reminder of the false glory it represents. It was for this reason he primarily left the staff mounted behind the chieftain's seat in the great hall, out of his sight but still a symbol for his people to rally behind.   Borobog ruled for several years in peace until the red orcs came. After being freed from slavery under humans the red orcs migrated to the only place orcs ruled independently. The red orcs numbered twice that of the free orcs and came with no experience surviving in the arctic wastes. Borobog has to decide what to do with these refugees.
