Draconic Rock Fern

Description:

This common fern is thought to have evolved in regions once frequented by dragons or shaped by ancient elemental forces. The Draconic Rock Fern draws its name from the jagged, scale-like structure of its fronds, which bear a resemblance to draconic hide. It thrives in remote highlands, cliffsides, and stony plateaus.

Fronds:

  • Long and curled at the edges, with rough, leathery texture
  •
  • Colors range from dark slate green to deep obsidian with subtle red or amber tips
  •
  • Fronds overlap like scales and can grow up to a meter in length
  •
  • Said to be fire-resistant and unnaturally strong for a plant

Stem & Root System:

  • Thick, bark-like base with exposed, knotted roots gripping into stone
  •
  • Grows directly from cracks in granite, often surrounded by moss and smaller alpine flora
  •
  • Withstands extreme winds and cold, making it ideal for exposed, elevated regions

Folklore:

"Legends speak of dragons nesting near patches of this fern, drawn to its likeness. Some say that the plant absorbs a dragon’s final breath if it dies nearby, granting the fronds a magical resonance. It’s considered a sacred guardian plant by many cliff-dwelling cultures."
