Aasimar
People of holy or blessed descent, aasimar are bound to protect someone for their entire lives; whether or not they choose to embrace this destiny is up to them.
This race's lore is based on Pointy Hat's "Vigil" species.
Basic Information
Anatomy
Aasimar, under normal circumstances, look nearly identical to the race of their non-angelic parent; however, they will have non-standard traits that make them stand out from others of their typical race. For example, an aasimar that has an elven parent would look largely like an elf. That said, aasimar have a few unique traits regardless of their heritage.
One of the two traits aasimar always have is their halo. As a result of their celestial heritage, aasimar all have a halo above or connected to their heads. These halos can have an ethereal glow, crackle with lightning, shine like gold, or any other number of effects.
The other trait an aasimar is guarenteed to have is vestigial wings. These are much too small for proper flight, but all aasimar have at least one set. The most common placement is on the sides of the head (potentially replacing ears), although some aasimar sprout them from their heels, forearms, or hips- but never their backs.
Along with these two traits, aasimar can also rarely manifest other celestial traits such as extra sets of eyes, often a different color from their natural ones; feathers that sprout from around their joints; their limbs fading to white or gold colors; or patches of skin being replaced by scales like marble.
Civilization and Culture
Interspecies Relations and Assumptions
When born, aasimar are granted not just the powers of their celestial parent, but also their duties. When born, an aasimar becomes metaphysically bound to a mortal born around the same time. This person is known as the aasimar's Ward, and it is the aasimar's duty to protect this person. They are mortal guardian angels, tasked not by the divine but by their lineage to protect the soul of another.
An aasimar does not choose to have a Ward, nor do they choose who their Ward is. When an aasimar's Ward dies, the aasimar also dies. The bond between an aasimar and their Ward cannot be broken, no matter how much either of them may wish for it.
