The Upper City

Geography

Approximately 1km below the surface is the region known as the Upper City, stretching down for another 5km or so, the majority of the denizens of the world reside within the ancient ruins here. It is far enough from the scorching heat of the surface to be cool enough for comfortable living, with temperatures ranging from as low as 18c to as high as 40c depending on location.

The vast majority of this level of the Endless City is like much of it, perpetual ruin. Vast sprawling networks of city ruins carved from large blocks of stone stretch forth unendingly in every direction save for the sky up above when on the edge of a plateau. These plateaus are part of the ruins themselves, large megastructures that house many hundreds of kilometres of floor space in their interior, with ruins ranging from tight corridors and cell-like rooms, to sweeping halls and grand balconies that overlook canyons. The vast majority of the ruins at this level are however disconcertingly large compared to the races that now dwell amongst them, with steps on staircases and doorways being approximately three times the size that is necessary, many settled areas have re-worked the stone ruins to make them more accommodating for their smaller stature.

Inbetween the megastructures that are the plateaus, vast gulfs of empty space can be found, some as narrow as a few metres across, allowing for the construction of bridges whether intentionally or accidentally by falling blocks of stone and collapsing structures due to the passage of time. Others may be many hundreds of metres across and are seemingly impassable without other means. These vast canyons between stretch an indeterminate amount below and certain death awaits anyone unlucky enough to fall. It is in these regions that water, which having carved it's way through various channels both artificial and natural, finds it's way to sunlight once more and cascades over the edge and down into the depths below as waterfalls.

Ecosystem

Away from the harsh heat and light of the surface world, life in the Upper City has it's chance to flourish. Lichens, grasses and succulents of most known varieties can be found growing amongst the ruins in the cracks and crevices of stones and in the abandoned gardens that can be found throughout, and in some areas most notably through cultivation, bushes and trees can be found with those bearing fruit most prized of all. Much of this plant life is clustered around the existence of waterfalls and intra-ruin riverways carved out through millennia, which for most is the only source of water in the region, however larger waterfall systems are known to generate enough mist in order to facilitate the creation of clouds and thus, sporadic rainfall.

Animals found in this region tend to be fairly small, with creatures such as domesticated dogs and cats being amongst the largest that most are likely to encounter. Animals that are able to survive amongst the ruins are usually either small with small food requirements owing to the sparse nature of plant matter and other prey animals and able to fit through tight spaces in order to avoid predators, or larger, more sedentary beings which opt for ambush tactics or simply rooting themselves to a single location to draw nutrients from the surrounding rock or a nearby water source.

Since this region is considered the most habitable by the majority of sapient species in the Endless City, it is also the region most heavily settled. Settlements tend to cluster around water sources or natural resources with rare, organisation sponsored colonies in strategic or religious locations.
