Little Blessings

These small fungi are known to many as 'Little Blessings' affording their name from grateful travellers, bandits, pilgrims and soldiers alike who's live have been saved by the precious water that their pearls are known to contain within them. They're often found growing in shady areas in the warmer, drier biomes of the world.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Little Blessings are small fungi that are roughly the size of a human fist. They have a star like shape consisting of 6 extended triangular 'fronds' that radiate out from the centre coming to a point. In the centre a pearl like portion of their body sits roughly the size of an eyeball. This centre piece is incredibly soft and spongy, and often filled with water.

The fungi is mostly coloured white on it's undersides with the top layer of the 6 triangular fronds having a baked earth colour and texture to them. The 'pearl' in the centre is a soft creamy white in appearance.

Genetics and Reproduction

These fungi reproduce via spores which will grow slowly once they reach a suitable environment.

Growth Rate & Stages

Owing to it's dependence on moisture in dry conditions, Little Blessings grow relatively slowly in comparison to other observed fungi in the world. It can take up to 12 years for one to reach full size, but the vast majority of that time is spent as a very small 'starlet', less than an inch in diameter.

Ecology and Habitats

Little Blessings inhabit the drier regions near the surface, primarily the upper city but they have been spotted sporadically on and near the surface. None have been seen in the lower city where it is, presumably, too moist for them to survive. They spend much of the day tightly balled up with their 6 fronts curled in to protect their 'pearl', at night when it is cooler, they unfurl and try to absorb as much moisture from the atmosphere as they can to be stored in their 'pearl'. Once dawn begins to break, they curl in again to prevent moisture loss from exposure to the heat of the day.
