Panilo

The panilo is a subterranean species with a large population near The Heavenly Fingers and its caves. They are quite mobile, sporting large wings to fly and sharp claws to burrow into patches of earth. Panilo diets can be herbivorous or insectivorous, though they typically crave insects more.   These creatures are highly sought after for their scales and leather, though they have a variety of defenses that make acquiring these materials difficult. Panilo are often peaceful, but will often attack if they feel threatened by rolling into a ball towards the transgressor, sharp scales pointed outward.

Basic Information

Anatomy

The panilo has four short limbs sporting sharp claws at its sides and two large, leathery wings sprouting from its back. Its forelimbs are able to hold up its body when walking on the ground, though its rear legs carry the majority of its weight.

Biological Traits

Panilo are well-known for their hardened scales and strong leathery wings, though they are not merely for protection and evasion. In case of competition or an unlikely predator, panilo can curl their whole bodies into a ball and fall onto or hurl themselves at the attacker. Many people living near panilo territories should avoid them whenever possible, as they may attack during mating season or if anyone approaches their resting spots.   Panilo are also noteworthy for their excessively long tongues, with some stretching up to 4 ft long. This is often used to dig around in hollowed-out rocks for insects. If the prey is still not within reach, panilo will curl up and hurl their bodies at the nest, often sending its prey scattering or exposing more of the nest.

Genetics and Reproduction

The average period of panilo gestation is around 7 months, with most birthing a small litter of 1 to 3 young. Parents will raise the young until maturity at age 2, at which point the offspring start living on their own. A typical female panilo will birth and raise 8 young in her lifetime.

Ecology and Habitats

The panilo typically resides in large, dark caves with plenty of biodiversity, favoring those with a high insect or rodent population. It typically prefers less humid environments, though will tolerate them if there are enough resources around to make up for it. Panilo often sleep on high ledges or on stalactites, wrapping their tails around the rocky protrusions and hanging from them for stability and safety.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Panilo are primarily insectivores, feasting on rock-burrowing or flying insects. If none are around, it will typically make do with consuming some vegetation like Spicemoss.

Additional Information

Uses, Products & Exploitation

The panilo's strong leather wings and hardened scales make it the prime target for poachers and craftsmen. Panilo wings can easily be stretched to create large portions of clothing or covers for books. The scales are much more valuable, with potential uses in armor, jewelry, and many other items.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Although many other subterranean creatures have echolocation, the panilo's poor hearing prevents such methods of sense. However, its excellent sense of smell and taste allow it to track down prey with relative ease.
