Inktober XV: Feast

Glutton's Blame, or the Cursed Feast, is an array of food feared by and banned in many areas of Endhaven. Its full composition, let alone the serving of the individual courses, is seen as an omen of misfortune and imminent death.

History

In 996, the Simulchian Armed Forces had set up camp in the foothills of Mount Josiah, intending to scale it at dawn and meet the enemy, the Lorenzians, soon after. In the hopes of a successful battle, a hearty course was prepared: firespun pork with glazcreel glaze, toasted rye, Ironhorse ale, and finished off with a handful of freshly-gathered hillberries.   After everyone had had their fill, they retired to their tents while those who had the night shift kept watch. Unfortunately, the filling quality of the sauced pork, as well as the strain of their recent journeys, wore down the guards and sent them into unconsciousness despite their best efforts. This allowed the Lorenzian scouts to investigate the area and relay the information back to the commanders, who quickly rode in and subdued the Simulchians, sparing none.   The Lorenzians considered themselves lucky, both in finding their enemy completely asleep and in using their newfound supplies to bolster their own dwindling rations, taking the Simulchian leftovers for their own meal for the next night. The food was enough to last them for another few days, but they would be unable to take pleasure in it, as they were quickly ambushed that night by a pack of wolves just as everyone had started to eat.   These events would repeat themselves in 1003, when remnants of the Simulchians had the same feast in honor of the previously fallen and as a tradition to honor their homeland, only to be completely surrounded within ten minutes of the next morning's battle.

Reaction/Culture

By 1019, many across the country were sure that this combination of foods would lead to some sort of misfortune or downfall, and many places had stopped serving the individual dishes entirely. Duchensse, a town whose main exports were pigs, and rye, thus suffered greatly once word was well-spread. In order to combat these rumors, the mayor Donovan Cheddal organized a communal feast featuring the exact same dishes at no charge to the public.   A few dozen peasants, as well as half of the advisory board, attended the dinner regardless of pleas from friends and family to stay away. The feast was remarked to be delicious, though the night was ruined when Cheddal fell motionless into his plate at the head of the table, as did most of the guests soon after who were not able to purge their systems in time. Apparently, some assassin used the opportunity of inviting the public to enter the function and poison the dishes, killing 17 others as well.   Cheddal's second-in-command, Gillian Lommel, took over his position the next day and quickly outlawed the sale and consumption of these dishes.
