Etherkind

And here I wa' thinking the a'id wa' the wor't thing on thi' 'pirit-for'aken island. I looked up and thought there wa' 'ome 'ort of gho't or 'omething far off ahead of me. Then it rai'ed it' arm'. And then it 'poke right into my head. Haven't 'lept a night after that.

Etherkind are the remnants of mortal races that lived in toxic areas such as Hyannis. Altered by the effects of the Cataclysm, etherkind now possess an upright form and sentience, but little aspect of their past selves remain.   These nearly alien beings are incorporeal, shed light naturally, and are believed to subsist off of acid.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Etehrkind have a vaguely bipedal stance and a shape similar to humans and other sentient races. However, their incorporeal nature allows them to phase through objects without hesitation. This also leads to a lack of bodily features, with no etherkind having natural facial features or reproductive organs.

Biological Traits

Most etherkind are somewhere between 5'4" and 6'2". Due to being incorporeal, there have been no recorded weights as of yet. Etherkind are thought to be biologically immortal.   The most prominent feature of etherkind, aside from their gaseous form, is their natural luminescence. This species often sheds a dim light within a small circle around itself at all times, though some researchers have noticed that they become brighter when startled or angry.

Ecology and Habitats

Due to the fact that there are no etherkind sightings beyond Hyannis and other wastelands, some believe that etherkind must survive off the acidic pools. Some speculate that the acid functions as a food source, while others believe it holds their misty form together.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

A high etherkind population is concentrated in Hyannis, though they often linger around other acidic puddles in such wastelands. Beyond these areas, however, no etherkind have ever been sighted.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Despite having no perceived methods of communication or sense, etherkind have a high sensitivity of their environment. They can communicate using telepathy, though it is unknown how they can understand visual or auditory occurrences.

Interesting race, do other races call them gas clouds as slang? Are they intelligent and kind or malevolent? Do they form communities at all? I am curious to know more if they are considered to be 'sapient'.

Hyannis is relatively isolated enough for them to not be widely-known, so they're really only known by adventurers who dare to venture to exotic and dangerous places. That makes the collective knowledge on them very scarce, which is why people usually turn tail and run at the sight of them. After all, seeing a telepathic being of pure plasma would be enough to deter even the most stalwart of explorers.

When you say they eat acid can they eat any kind? Or is it specifically battery or hydrochloric acid or some other kind of acid? If an adventurer throws a vial of acid at them would the Etherkind just consume it?

Based on the lack of formal research, it's unknown what they like about acid, but it does seem to be a factor as to their habitat. As for the thrown acid, it's likely the vial would either phase through them, combust upon impact, or be absorbed entirely, as each of these situations have been witnessed before the thrower in question ran back to their ship.

How do the more talented and experienced adventurers deal with them?

Due to Hyannis' isolation and etherkinds' otherworldly nature, there haven't been any confirmed killings of them. However, some people are thinking that ore from Laccora's volcano might produce blades strong enough to kill an etherkind...
