Ysgard

Ysgard — The Eternal Battlefield

Ysgard is an Outer Plane of heroic struggle, glory, and unyielding courage. It is a realm where battle is not a tragedy but a calling, and where strength, honor, and bravery define worth. To many in Enderlin, Ysgard is the promised afterlife of warriors — a place where valor is eternal and defeat is never final.

Ysgard does not celebrate conquest or cruelty. Instead, it exalts the joy of struggle, the testing of oneself against worthy foes, and the bonds forged in shared combat.

Nature of the Plane

Ysgard is a realm of vast floating landmasses drifting through an endless sky. Each earthberg bears mountains, forests, fortresses, and battlefields, separated by roaring voids of wind, lightning, and cloud.

Storms are constant companions in Ysgard. Thunder rolls across the plane, lightning splits the heavens, and the clash of steel echoes from horizon to horizon. Yet amid the chaos, there is laughter, song, and celebration.

Death in Ysgard is rarely permanent. Those slain in honorable combat often rise again with the next dawn, restored to fight anew. Cowardice, however, is remembered.

Realms and Domains of Ysgard

Scholars of Enderlin disagree on how Ysgard is best divided. Older heroic traditions describe the plane as three great realms — Asgard, Vanaheim, and Jotunheim — while modern planar cosmology speaks instead of numerous divine halls, battlefields, and legendary domains scattered across the plane.

Most agree that these interpretations do not contradict one another, but rather reflect different ways of naming the same eternal truths.

The Ancient Realms

In myth and warrior lore, Ysgard is said to consist of three great realms:

  • Asgard — Towering halls, golden strongholds, and heroic feasts, embodying honor, leadership, and legacy.
  • Vanaheim — Wild fields, rivers, and open lands where strength is proven through endurance, kinship, and the cycles of life.
  • Jotunheim — Harsh mountains and frozen wastes, home to giants and monstrous foes that test even the mightiest warriors.

These names persist in sagas, prayers, and battle songs, even if their boundaries are no longer clearly defined.

Recognized Domains

In current planar scholarship, Ysgard is understood as a single plane containing many notable regions and divine domains, including:

  • Valiant Hall, the gathering place of heroic souls and fallen champions
  • The Plain of Ida, a legendary battlefield and meeting ground
  • Muspelheim, a realm of fire and destruction where strength is tested through ruin
  • Nidavellir, a domain of master smiths and legendary craftsmanship
  • The Den of Olidammara, a hall of revelry, cunning, and daring exploits

Many believe these domains are what mortals once named Asgard, Vanaheim, or Jotunheim, seen through different cultural lenses.

Inhabitants

Ysgard is populated by beings who thrive on struggle:

  • Heroic Celestials and warrior spirits
  • Giants, both noble and monstrous
  • Petitioners, the souls of brave mortals
  • Valorous beasts bred for battle and sport

Despite constant conflict, there is little hatred in Ysgard. Foes often share feasts after battle, bound by mutual respect and shared glory.

Souls and the Afterlife

Souls drawn to Ysgard are those who lived lives of bravery, honor, and defiance. Warriors, champions, rebels, and defenders find their reward not in rest, but in eternal challenge.

In Ysgard, souls hone their strength, relive legendary battles, and forge new sagas that echo across the plane.

Travel and Influence

Barbarians, fighters, and war-priests of Enderlin often feel a deep connection to Ysgard. Planar gateways are said to appear on legendary battlefields, atop storm-wracked peaks, or at moments of ultimate defiance.

Visitors who lack courage or conviction quickly find themselves overwhelmed — but those who stand firm are welcomed as comrades.

Role in the Multiverse

Within the Great Wheel, Ysgard represents the belief that struggle gives life meaning, and that courage is proven through action, not words.

To walk Ysgard is to accept that victory is fleeting, defeat is instructive, and glory is earned again with every rising sun.
