Limbo
Limbo — The Ever-Shifting Maelstrom
Limbo is an Outer Plane of absolute chaos, raw creativity, and unrestrained change. Nothing in Limbo is stable unless held together by will alone. To the scholars and mystics of Enderlin, Limbo is both the birthplace of endless possibility and a warning of what existence becomes when structure is abandoned entirely.
Here, reality itself is fluid, and only those with strength of mind or spirit can survive for long.
Nature of the Plane
Limbo has no fixed terrain. Seas turn to stone, stone melts into fire, and fire dissolves into thought. Islands of temporary stability drift through roiling chaos, forming and dissolving without warning.
The sky has no single color, and gravity is inconsistent at best. Time behaves erratically, and distance is meaningless. The plane responds to emotion, intent, and force of will, reshaping itself around strong personalities.
Stability Through Will
In Limbo, order is an act of defiance.
Powerful minds can impose temporary stability, forming solid ground, breathable air, or shelter through concentration alone. When that focus falters, chaos returns immediately.
This trait makes Limbo both incredibly dangerous and strangely liberating — those who master their will can shape reality itself, if only briefly.
Inhabitants
Limbo is home to beings born of chaos:
- Slaadi, chaotic outsiders who thrive in Limbo’s instability
- Chaotic Elementals and proto-matter entities
- Petitioners, souls who embraced freedom, impulse, or rejection of structure
- Githzerai, who immigrated to this plane
- Exiles and wanderers who seek escape from law or fate
Violence is common but rarely purposeful. Conflict arises from impulse rather than hatred.
Souls and the Afterlife
Souls drawn to Limbo are those who rejected authority, tradition, or fixed identity in life. Some revel in the freedom, dissolving into the plane’s chaos and becoming something entirely new. Others lose themselves, their identity eroded until nothing remains.
Limbo offers no judgment, no reward, and no punishment — only change.
Travel and Influence
Limbo is one of the most difficult planes to reach deliberately, as it resists structured magic. Portals often form accidentally through wild magic surges, planar rifts, or catastrophic arcane failures.
Those who return from Limbo often struggle with reality, finding the ordered world of Enderlin restrictive or unreal by comparison.
Role in the Multiverse
Within the Great Wheel, Limbo stands as the embodiment of chaos unrestrained. It is creation without plan, freedom without safety, and possibility without promise.
To enter Limbo is to gamble with one’s body, mind, and soul — yet for some, that gamble is the purest expression of freedom imaginable.
