Bytopia

Bytopia — The Twin Paradises of Honest Labor

Bytopia is a plane of balanced good and structured freedom, where cooperation, craftsmanship, and self-reliance are held as sacred ideals. It is a realm that rewards effort, mutual respect, and the quiet dignity of work well done.

Unlike the rigid perfection of Mount Celestia or the pastoral harmony of Elysium, Bytopia celebrates industry and balance — a place where good is achieved not through destiny or command, but through cooperation, perseverance, and shared purpose.

Nature of the Plane

Bytopia is defined by its duality. The plane consists of two mirrored layers, each reflecting a different expression of productive goodness:

  • Dothion, the bright and open surface
  • Shurrock, the rugged and industrious underside

Gravity itself is subjective in Bytopia. Creatures naturally orient themselves toward whichever layer they occupy, allowing both realms to exist simultaneously — two worlds sharing the same space, yet rarely colliding.

The land is rich and fertile. Hills are quilted with farmland, forests are carefully tended, rivers are clean and purposeful, and settlements are built to last generations. Nothing here is wasted. Everything has a role.

Time flows steadily, and the plane resists extremes. Sudden cataclysms, planar distortions, or chaotic magic are naturally dampened, reinforcing the sense of stability and continuity.

The Layers of Bytopia

Though only two in number, Bytopia’s layers are deeply symbolic and distinct.

  • Dothion — A land of gentle hills, orchards, sunlit forests, and orderly towns. Communities thrive through agriculture, trade, and cooperation. Roads are well maintained, homes are sturdy, and life here rewards diligence and honesty.
  • Shurrock — A harsher, mountainous realm of caverns, forges, quarries, and underground strongholds. Rich in minerals and raw materials, Shurrock demands hard labor and resilience. Great works of stone, metal, and engineering are born here.

Together, the layers form a complete cycle: Dothion cultivates and sustains, while Shurrock builds and endures.

Inhabitants

Bytopia is populated by beings who value effort, fairness, and communal good:

  • Gnomes — Especially rock and Deep Gnomes, who see Bytopia as an ideal afterlife.
  • Dwarves — Craftsfolk, miners, and builders who find Shurrock a sacred place of labor.
  • Petitioners — Souls who lived honest, industrious lives, continuing their work in peaceful fulfillment.
  • Guardinals and Celestial Allies — Rare but present, ensuring the plane remains safe from corruption.

Outsiders who come in good faith are often welcomed, but laziness, exploitation, or arrogance are quietly but firmly discouraged.

Souls and Fulfillment

Souls that arrive in Bytopia are those who valued responsibility, craftsmanship, and cooperation in life. Rather than eternal rest or bliss, they are granted purpose without suffering.

Petitioners may farm fields that never fail, forge tools that never crack, or help raise towns that stand forever. Labor here is satisfying rather than exhausting, and success is shared rather than hoarded.

Those who seek to exploit others, dominate communities, or avoid responsibility find the plane subtly resistant — tools break, paths grow long, and cooperation fades until balance is restored.

Travel and Influence

Bytopia is one of the more accessible Upper Planes:

  • Natural portals often appear near workshops, farms, or ancient trade roads.
  • Divine passage may be granted to those devoted to gods of craft, community, or honest labor.
  • Planar travel magic is reliable, provided it is used responsibly.

The plane gently reshapes visitors, encouraging patience, humility, and teamwork. Those who resist this influence often leave frustrated, feeling oddly out of place.

Role in the Multiverse

Within the Great Wheel, Bytopia represents good achieved through effort, standing between the lawful ascension of Mount Celestia and the free harmony of Elysium.

It is the plane of builders, farmers, artisans, and communities — proof that goodness is not only found in heroism or sacrifice, but in consistency, cooperation, and care for one another.

Bytopia does not shine as brightly as some Upper Planes, nor does it sing with divine glory. Instead, it endures — a quiet, steadfast testament to the power of honest work and shared purpose.
