Arcadia

Arcadia — The Peaceable Kingdoms of Law and Harmony

Arcadia is an Outer Plane where law and goodness blend into harmony and disciplined peace. Unlike the absolute order of Mechanus or the rigid hierarchy of the Seven Heavens, Arcadia represents a living balance — a realm where structure exists to foster cooperation, serene beauty, and purposeful community rather than mere obedience or conquest. It is often called the Peaceable Kingdoms of Arcadia, where every element of the plane functions in coordinated, harmonious design.

Nature of the Plane

Arcadia is a realm of perfect organization and tranquil beauty. The landscape is composed of flat, orderly plains, rivers that run in mathematically precise courses, forests planted in strict rows, and fields of orchards and crops tended to with meticulous care. Cities and structures are geometrically laid out with efficiency and aesthetic symmetry.

A unique feature of Arcadia is the Orb of Day and Night, a giant sphere perched atop the plane’s highest peak that rotates such that half of the continent is bathed in daylight while the other half remains in starlight. There is no gradual dawn or dusk — the change is instantaneous and uniform across the plane.

The atmosphere of Arcadia radiates a sense of balance and cooperative purpose. The very land encourages collaboration, restraint, and thoughtful action. Lawful ideas here are not dry rules — they are the rhythms that maintain peace without rigidity.

The Layers of Arcadia

Arcadia traditionally comprises three infinite layers, though one (Nemausus) was absorbed into Mechanus in some cosmologies, leaving the two best documented:

  • Abellio — The first and most familiar layer of Arcadia. Endless plains, gentle hills, clear lakes, and orderly forests stretch without end. This layer holds many of the plane’s known divine realms and portals to neighboring planes, and serves as the focal point for Arcadia’s harmonious existence.
  • Buxenus — A deeper layer, containing cultivated terrain and the domains of powerful entities. Buxenus features orderly hills, winding rivers, and perfectly placed groves. Several divine realms, including those of Azuth, Savras, and the Mulhorandi pantheon’s Heliopolis, are located here.
  • (Former) Nemausus — Once considered the third layer, Nemausus was absorbed into Mechanus when planar forces shifted its alignment toward pure law. Little is now known about this layer directly within Arcadia’s context.

Despite some differences in interpretations, the common thread is that each layer reinforces Arcadia’s theme of ordered peace and structured prosperity.

Inhabitants

Arcadia is populated by creatures that reflect its tranquil yet disciplined nature:

  • Spirit Legions — Souls of lawful and lawful‑good mortals who find rest here, forming peaceful but organized host communities.
  • Celestials — Planetars, devas, hollyphants, and other beings of law and goodness dwell here in calm collaboration rather than strict hierarchy.
  • Peaceful Fauna — Magical, metallic‑colored animals (rabbits with copper coats, golden foxes, sheep with silver wool, and more) roam Arcadia’s fields in harmony. Their serene nature and illusion‑piercing sight make them unique to the plane.
  • Visiting Outsiders — Creatures like lammasu, shedu, and ki‑rin sometimes visit or reside here, drawn by Arcadia’s focus on lawful good purpose.
  • Formians — Regimented, ant‑like creatures that seek to expand orderly colonies and organize all they encounter.

The wildlife and sentient beings of Arcadia do not conflict instinctively; instead, they work toward shared goals of peace, sustainability, and structured cooperation.

Souls and Harmony

Souls drawn to Arcadia often embody lawful neutrality or lawful good alignment. Here, they find an environment that supports discipline, community, and moral purpose without the rigid hierarchy of more strictly lawful planes.

The plane’s influence encourages individuals to act not just lawfully, but for the common good. Those who resist cooperation or disrupt harmony may feel a subtle pressure to adapt or be left on the periphery.

Many souls eventually move deeper within the plane’s mysteries or along the Great Wheel toward realms like the Seven Heavens as they advance in wisdom and purpose.

Travel and Influence

Arcadia is connected to neighboring lawful planes:

  • Portals linking Abellio to Mechanus, the Seven Heavens, and the Concordant Opposition appear at fixed locations and are framed with trellises of ivory or steel.
  • Travel between layers is possible via Arcadia’s internal portals or planar magic.

Despite its serenity, Arcadia is not stagnant — travelers may encounter laws and customs that prize teamwork, rituals of balance, and tests of moral clarity. Adventurers here often find their strengths and weaknesses in teamwork highlighted by the plane’s structured nature.

Role in the Multiverse

Within the Great Wheel, Arcadia represents the harmonious intersection of law and good — a plane where order exists not for domination or neutrality alone, but to support cooperation, beauty, and shared purpose.

It stands as a counterpoint to the stern neutrality of Mechanus and the radiant benevolence of the Seven Heavens, exemplifying that law guided by goodness can bring about a tranquil, thriving existence.
