Artemis

Artemis

Artemis is a large eagle and the primary companion of Master Huntsman Damascus Grey. Artemis, as a young eaglet, was left abandoned when her parents were killed in a freak storm. As is natures way, Artemis would likely have died and perished another victim of the brutal seasons in The Reaches. But fate is a funny thing that it is had a different plan for the young bird. In her death throes as the panic of cold and starvation began to set in, her anguished cries and squawks would not fall on deaf ears this time. A Terrifying shaking of the tree that Artemis' nest was lodged in terrified the young bird, until a dark looming figure heaved themselves into the upper branches, breathing heavily.   Artemis' fear of this unknown intruder was quickly quashed as a sudden gentle soothing took over her feelings, her squawking diminished, and her panic subsided. With this feeling, she took her first few faltering steps to the outstretched hand of the mysterious figure, she was tucked gently into his back, and he climbed down the tree.   Since that fateful night, Artemis has lived side by side with her new human companion, hunting with him, feeding with him, and keeping fierce watch on his possessions. This relationship has lasted for over ten years now, she learned to fly, and eventually to hunt, she learned how the man moved, how the man hunted and learned. Nowadays Artemis and her companion Damascus hunt like a single entity, with Damascus flushing prey, and Artemis can swoop in for the kill. When it comes to larger prey that Artemis could never hope to challenge herself, she can scout and emit a specific series of squawks and caws, and circles the general area of the target allowing for Damascus to move in and make the kill.   The two are inseparable and have taken good care of each other through good times, and the bad.

Personal history

The only life that Artemis has known is the life she has lived with Damascus Grey. It has been a life in the wilds, an experience of hunting and hardship in against the most ferocious of weathers. However, it has also been a life of love, trust and companionship.   When Artemis grew big enough to try and learn to fly, Damascus would spend entire days with her encouraging her instincts to take over, from hopping to jumping to gliding and then finally flight. Damascus was there to keep her fed and to rescue her whenever she got stuck. This period of Artemis' life is what formed into the solid bond of trust and love to her new companion.   Eventually, as she got well versed at flying she started learning how to hunt, the early days there were many misses, and very little success but Damascus ensured she never went hungry. When Artemis managed to make her first successful catch of a large squirrel in a tree, she immediately brought it back to Damascus, who separated some meat for himself and left the rest for her. From that day onward, she would always hunt for herself, but being so attuned to her master would always bring back extra when his supplies were running low.   After mastering the art of the hunt, Damascus would then spend days with her, making hand gesture and symbols, then doing actions. Artemis learned very quickly that the hand signals were for her, and the activities Damascus was doing things for her to take note. So began the next stage of basic communication between the two.   The first time that Damascus took Artemis into a small city, it was a terrifying experience for the bird, she perched on Damascus' should claws digging deep into his furs and cutting his shoulder. Nothing terrible ever happened to her, many people would stop and stare at this large man and the giant bird on his shoulder, but none would ever give issue. Slowly Artemis became more comfortable, but would rarely leave the shoulder of Damascus. Due to this new perch that Artemis has chosen, Damascus would eventually go onto to by a thick boiled leather shoulder guard, and covered it in thick fur, to allow Artemis a firm grip, without gouging flesh.

Intellectual Characteristics

Artemis is a surprisingly intelligent bird, with a much more well-defined personality and intelligence that would be above any other bird of the same species. She is so well attuned to the desires of her master that she can often act as an extension to Damascus' own body. She is fiercely loyal and will protect her master and his possessions to her very death.   She may not fully understand the common tongue, but she can understand basic commands and hand signals. She is very responsive to the tone of voice, so even if she knows not the words spoken, she can react to the sound in which they are said.
