Mahdi al-Haq

Grand Vizier Mahdi al-Haq

Mahdi al-Haq was originally born in the Emirate of Andros. He was the son of a fairly successful merchant who was able to buy a Jakonian slave to help educate his son in affairs of currency and the world. Then, he and his family were traveling on business towards Bimini when they were attacked by a ship from Aljana. Mahdi's family was slain and he was himself enslaved by the Sultan's own son, Abdul Hakeem. Faced with constant peril and the threat of death, he constantly had to defend himself, and his efforts actually stopped three different assassination attempts upon Abdul Hakeem. Abdul Hakeem was well aware of Mahdi's education and fairly soft upbringing, and they became strangely close friends despite their differences, and Mahdi was freed in 1025. When his friend became Sultan in 1034, Mahdi was selected as the new Grand Vizier.    Mahdi is said to be greatly out of his depth with the position he has found himself thrust into, but he seems enjoy the perks of being associated with such wealth and power. Abdul Hakeem's greatest focus is upon raiding and pillaging, so Mahdi has found himself essentially in charge of directing the Bahami Sultanates. Mahdi has done his best to mediate between emirs, but for the most part, they rarely respect his upbringing and background and he has a hard time making himself heard. He has further sent out new ambassadors and has tried to bring peace with the Jakonians, but the Empire too has realized that Mahdi has very little control or power over the raids of even the Sultan himself.
