Yenanra Species in Emaxus | World Anvil
Emaxus is currently undergoing a large entry into a new Age (and a large revision of the current Age). Consider this an active construction zone: things are moving around, getting changed, and the world's being reorganized. Apologies for the inconvenience!

Yenanra (yin-ahn-ruh)

Emaxus' Eladrin

Called different names depending on their season, Yenanra (season-children in elvish) are the favored fey elves of Sylthereth. Unlike most other elves, they never left or were moved from their ancient charge as courtiers and entertainers in the great courts of the Syltherethian fey. In this many-millennia charge, the Yenanra have become their own breed -- still elves in name, but fey in their likeness and adaptation -- for they have become children of the seasons, with different types of Yenanra arising depending on the season of Sylthereth they occupy and/or the Syltherethian court they entertain.

Members of the Fey Courts

Yenanra are mainstays in the courts of Sylthereth, and it is a rare thing for them to be seen outside of the Verdant Expanse. Ranging from entertainers and servants to high-ranking lords and influential courtiers, Yenanra have fully immersed themselves in the plotting and planning of the archfey and their supplicants. It is uncommon for a Yenanra to not possess a modicum of social wit and conversational cunning, for their existence often depends on it.   Because the archfey can, at times, be cruel and difficult to understand, some of the Yenanra across Yophas are actually exiles and outcasts, or the descendants of them. Thus, though rare, Yenanra have slowly made their way into communities across the planes of the Eternal Design.

Products of Change

Yenanra are, above all else, used to change. Though the grand design of Sylthereth rarely shifts, the fey courts are always moving positions, waging wars against one another -- cold and hot ones -- and maneuvering within and without their ranks. At best, this creates Yenanra who are adaptable and indomitable; at worst, it creates Yenanra who can be paranoid and slow to make attachments, for they never know when they may be exiled for looking at someone the wrong way.

Season-Children

Yenanra have slowly evolved into four distinct subraces based on the different courts they have served. Because each court tends to keep their domains in a certain season in nigh-perpetuity, four types of Yenanra have been born, connected to each season. This can have an effect on a Yenanra's innate dispositions or personalities, but it mostly affects their physical forms and magical abilities, if they have them.   A Yenanra related to summer (called a Ro-Yenanra) might have bright yellow skin and hair like golden sun, while a Yenanra related to winter (called an Au-Yenanra) may be pale blue with stark white hair. See each subrace below for their physical descriptions.

Yenanra Names and Culture

A Yenanra's name depends heavily on the type of Yenanra they are. As with all fey, their true name is closely guarded; the names they go by instead are their common names, which often sound like nicknames or include their title/honorific. Yenanra do not use family names and do not delineate names between genders -- including their true names. A Yenanra's true name is something they discover when they turn one hundred years old, and is typically a fey name; like all fey, a Yenanra's closest   Ta-Yenanra Names: Allwind, Briartree, Brightlight, Leafguard, Leafwind, Newbloom, Newthorn, Rainheart, Rosebloom, Spring, Springbloom, Thornlord, Zenthorn   Ro-Yenanra Names: Antflower, Bladeleaf, Bladesun, Crownstar, Dandelion, Leafheat, Summer, Summerlord, Sunheart, Stormwind, Thornleaf, Warmheart   La-Yenanra Names: Autumn, Autumnleaf, Browncape, Changewind, Coolwind, Leafchange, Rainbeat, Treerain, Underleaf, Uppermoon, Valleywind   Au-Yenanra Names: Chillwind, Coldglade, Darkness, Fallengold, Frozenbloom, Moonblade, Rimefriend, Snowlady, Starsky, Tombfrost, Umber, Winter, Winterchild   Yenanra True Names: Aven Garlictwill, Comet Darkspeck, Cricket Quickwood, Dew Oakmint, Dina Tumblemint, Finch Lemonflame, Heaven Toadpebbles, Rosa Foggythorn, Topiary Driftheart

Creating Your Character

At 1st level, you choose what race your character belongs to. If you choose a Yenanra, follow the rules found below to make your Yenanra hero -- or villain.

Ability Score Increases

When determining your character's ability scores, increase one score by 2 and increase a different score by 1, or increase three different scores by 1. Follow this rule regardless of the method you use to determine the scores, such as rolling or point buy. The "Quick Build" section of your character's class offers suggestions on which scores to increase. You can follow those suggestions or ignore them, but you can't raise any of your scores above 20.

Languages

Your character can speak, read, and write Common and one other language that you can your DM agree is appropriate for the character. The Player's Handbook offers a list of languages to choose from. The DM is free to modify that list for a campaign.

Creature Type

Every creature in D&D, including each player character, has a special tag in the rules that identifies the type of creature they are. Most player characters are of the Humanoid type. Your race tells you what your character's creature type is.   Here's a list of the game's creature types in alphabetical order: Aberration, Beast, Celestial, Construct, Dragon, Elemental, Fey, Fiend, Giant, Humanoid, Monstrosity, Ooze, Plant, Undead. These types don't have rules themselves, but some rules in the game affect creatures of certain types in different ways. For example, the cure wounds spell doesn't work on a Construct or an Undead.

Yenanra Traits

Your Yenanra character has a certain number of traits they gain from their elven and fey ancestry. Also, choose one of the four Yenanra subraces when you make your character. This determines the bonus effect of your Fey Step feature and the general physical traits your character has.
Creature Type
You are a Fey. You are also considered an elf for any prerequisite or effect that requires you to be an elf.
Size
You are Medium.
Speed
Your walking speed is 30 feet.
Darkvision
You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light and in darkness as if it were dim light. You discern colors in that darkness only as shades of gray.
Fey Ancestry
You have advantage on saving throws you make to avoid or end the charmed condition on yourself.
Fey Step
As a bonus action, you can magically teleport up to 30 feet to an unoccupied space you can see. You can use this trait a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and you regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest.   When you reach 3rd level, your Fey Step gains an additional effect based on your season; if the effect requires a saving throw, the DC equals 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma modifier (choose when you select this race):
  • Ta-Yenanra. When you use your Fey Step, you can touch one willing creature within 5 feet of you. That creature then teleports instead of you, appearing in an unoccupied space of your choice that you can see within 30 feet of you.
  • Ro-Yenanra. Immediately after you use your Fey Step, each creature of your choice that you can see within 5 feet of you takes fire damage equal to your proficiency bonus.
  • La-Yenanra. Immediately after you use your Fey Step, up to two creatures of your choice that you can see within 10 feet of you must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw or be charmed by you for 1 minute, or until you or your companions deal any damage to the creatures.
  • Au-Yenanra. When you use your Fey Step, one creature of your choice that you can see within 5 feet of you before you teleport must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw or be frightened of you until the end of your next turn.
Keen Senses
You have proficiency in the Perception skill.
Trance
You don’t need to sleep, and magic can’t put you to sleep. You can finish a long rest in 4 hours if you spend those hours in a trancelike meditation, during which you retain consciousness.

Ta-Yenanra (Spring-Children)

Ta-Yenanra are the children of spring. Often found amidst the Duchy of Efflorescence and the Blossom Counties, Ta-Yenanra are raised among courts that delight in growth, change, and playful jests meant to prod the seed of the soul into a blossom.   Ta-Yenanra often have skin that falls within the infinite spectrum of green or even yellow, with hair that often mimics the look and color of blossoming flowers, in all their infinite colors. Their eyes are almost any warm color.

Ro-Yenanra (Summer-Children)

Found in the Evergreen Dominion -- the heart of the Amaranthine Court -- Ro-Yenanra are the heat-born offspring of summer. They are passionate, dedicated, and often follow the Summer Queen Naivara the closest.   Their skin tends to be yellow, orange, or red, though it can also be bright green and even bright blue, like the sky of day. Their hair can be equally varied, as can their eyes. In whatever combination they are composed, they are bright and sunny.

La-Yenanra (Fall-Children)

La-Yenanra are autumn incarnate, most at home among the fey of the Children of Harvest and the Autumn Duchy. They tend to see change in the big picture, and revel in the management and observation of the more spring- and summer-related courts' shenanigans.   La-Yenanra look like the changing leaves of fall. They range from dull green to bright red, though their eyes can be beautiful green or blue -- a reminder of rebirth and life.

Au-Yenanra (Winter-Children)

Though often the least understood, Au-Yenanra -- and the courts they belong to -- also tend to be the most respected among their peers for their wisdom and wide-viewing plans. The most notable of the winter courts is the County of Frost, which is regarded as the most mature and far-seeing of all the courts, save Queen Naivara's Evergreen Dominion. But don't let appearances fool you; the County of Frost -- and all winter-favored courts of Sylthereth -- are not above the games of their fey brethren, they merely have the slowest burns.   Au-Yenanra are like snow, ice, and the winter moon. They are comprised of colors ranging from deep blue and purple to snow white and grey.
