The Cleolinere Islands

Thanks to David Frasheski from ArtStation for the fresh cover art!
A series of islands to the south of mainland Iotura, the Cleolinere island chain was long under the tyrannical rule of Valthrak, Lord of Embers, before he was slain by the combined forces of Iotura, spearheaded by Yathra Silthame. Since those days, the Cleolinere islands have appreciated peace and prosperity since the fall of their scaled tyrant.   The Cleolinere islands consist of five major landmasses: Cleolinere itself, and then Barrock Holm, Bevertane Isle, the Renegade Isle, and Eckware Haven are arrayed around the island in a semicircle. Most civilization is based around Cleolinere, which was the seat of Valthrak during his brutal rule of the island chain, but there are smaller settlements sprinkled across the rest of the islands.

Cleolinere

The namesake of the Cleolinere island chain, Cleolinere was the throne of Valthrak for several centuries, and as such is the most developed of the five landmasses. It is dominated by the Canorior Caldera, a several mile wide pool of lava housed in a several thousand foot high peak that once served as the lair of Valthrak himself. The slow, descending slope of the caldera is actually the entirety of the landmass, and is dominated by rich jungles fertilized by the ash-infused soil of the island.

New Beginsand

Large Town <> Population: 6,782 (62% human, 33% elf, 3% dwarf, 2% other)   The main settlement of Cleolinere is New Beginsand, which is built on the ruins of Old Beginsand, the capital of Cleolinere that was torched in Valthrak's rage when Yathra Silthame invaded his territory. Nestled against the western coast of Cleolinere, New Beginsand has seen solid growth and a strong development of its maritime trade since its reconstruction, especially with Yathra Silthame and Agrad.   The town is governed by a lord-mayor that also serves as the regent of the island, and New Beginsand exerts some limited influence over the settlements on the smaller, surrounding islands. New Beginsand has one main temple which is dedicated chiefly to the Yamma but respecting all of his Children as well. It is constructed of fine marble and black obsidian harvested from the active caldera nearby.   The town is built on trade, functioning as a port-of-call for ships travelling to and from Yathra Silthame and the rest of the world, as well as shipping out precious metals, strong tropical timber, and rare obsidian. Given its relative wealth and its surplus of fine stone and lumber, New Beginsand is largely stone buildings with wood structuring, to ensure it can never be torched by a vengeful red dragon again (though whether or not that would really help is debatable). Though the town bears a scarred past on account of dragons, the legends of Valthrak's battle with the Silverguard and his annihilation of Old Beginsand have inspired some... less than tasteful draconic cults.

Barrock Holm

The westernmost island of the Cleolinere chain, Barrock Holm is mostly unsettled, a largely flat island nearly wholly dominated by dense jungles and entirely rimmed by white sand beaches. In the heart of the jungle of Barrock Holm is an ancient temple, believed to predate the Reckoning. Scholars and archaeologists have been unable to investigate the temple due to the hostile, dense nature of the jungle, as well as rumors of dark secrets in the temple itself.

Bevertane Isle

The Bevertane Isle is the northwestern island of the Cleolinere island chain, and is rimmed by white sand beaches and dominated by large hills and bluffs which lead to little in the way of dense vegetation, with some tropical bushes and a few tracts of jungle. Most of the island was strip-mined under Valthrak's reign, and many of its hills now have flat tops or are bare stone and piles of dust. Said dust, on windier, dry days, leads to choking dust storms that plague the nearby settlement of South Terties, the only settlement on the island.

South Terties

Small Town <> Population: 1,423 (80% human, 16% dwarf, 2% elf, 2% other)   South Terties is the sole settlement on Bevertane Isle, and is a rather poor working settlement. It is largely wooden shacks, and the only buildings of note in the town are the tavern, The Fiery Pelican, and the quarry that provides almost all of the town work, the Blackstone Quarry. South Terties has no noble class, nor an official ruler, and is instead run by a group of merchants who run a franchise of the Blackstone Trade Corporation, and employ nearly every inhabitant of the town.

Renegade Isle

The Renegade Isle is the northernmost island of the island chain, and is a relatively small island of dense jungle and white sand beaches, with one relatively large bay with dark, rocky cliffs along the western shore. This cove is riddled with caves and massive rocks that obscure sight, and make sailing into the bay treacherous. The cove is the only inhabited portion of the island and is used as a den of criminals and smugglers. Renegade Isle is a valuable stop for long slaving and smuggling runs across the sea, or a last stop for those traveling from Aitreas to Iotura, and vice versa, who need to check in with their respective guilds or organizations, or just restock.

Eckware Haven

The easternmost island of the chain, Eckware Haven is actually closer to a massive sand bar than a true island, being submerged by about three inches to a foot of water across most its surface area, only breaking the sea level in a few areas. These areas are lightly vegetated with grasses and a handful of palm trees, and are inhabited by only the most basic of creatures. It is studied, on occasion, by scholars worldwide for its untouched ecosystem and the delicate balance its creatures maintain.
