Dimensions of Reality: The Planes, Time and Space, and Magic Physical / Metaphysical Law in Emaxus | World Anvil
Emaxus is currently undergoing a large entry into a new Age (and a large revision of the current Age). Consider this an active construction zone: things are moving around, getting changed, and the world's being reorganized. Apologies for the inconvenience!

Dimensions of Reality: The Planes, Time and Space, and Magic

"Well, the lunar-arcane isn't as simply as 'energy.' It's the fabric of reality itself; a sea of strings within and without all things." - Unknown archmage

Yophas is a construction of reality that is as simple as it is complex; paradoxical and yet perfectly ordered; damaged and yet working as designed. To understand Yophas most fully, one must understand the dimensions of reality that constitute it. Every plane of Yophas, including Ipacia and Xeccamund beyond, has the three dimensions of space and the single dimension of time. Permeating space and time, functioning as both a fifth dimension and a foundational "first" dimension, is the lunar-arcane: magic.

Space and Time Across the Planes

Space and Time are largely the same across the planes. Time flows according to the Yophasian Standard, which was set in motion by Laianath and perpetuated by Alindr's Designs. Space can be peculiar for mortals to understand, since some planes seem functionally infinite (like Xaecreotis and the Elemental Planes, in particular), yet others are very clearly material and defined (like Emaxus).    Some regions across the plane had their perception of Time damaged in the Reckoning, but trying to enumerate all the ways the Reckoning messed up reality is an exercise in futility; the point is that time anomalies can and do exist, whether as small bubbles of frozen time or gravitational anomalies where time is both faster and slower.   The only plane with a fundamentally different passage of Time is Laithna. As Laianath's home plane and the plane of the afterlife, Laithna exists both within and without the flow of Time. It simultaneously exists at all points in Time, yet is perceived differently by the relative time of whoever is perceiving it.    For example, someone who has managed to travel to Laithna in 399 AR would perceive the Laithna of 399 AR, yet that does not mean all the other Laithnas of all the other times do not exist. Laithna is a paradox without Time that exists at all points in Time.

The Lunar-Arcane

The fifth dimension (or first, considering how integral it is to reality), is the lunar-arcane; magic. Magic is energy. Energy is the foundation of everything, and thus exists within all things. The lunar-arcane is perceived as a sea of infinitesimal, silver strings forming the "fabric" of reality. These strings form the energy (and thus the substance) of everything. It is the fifth dimension in that it exists beyond Time and Space, yet it is also the first it that it forms Time and Space.   Essentially, the lunar-arcane is almost like real-world (our world) string theory.

Brian, What's With These Paradoxes?

You're probably a little confused. You might be asking questions like "How can Laithna exist within and without Time?" "How is the lunar-arcane the first and the fifth dimension?" "Why do you spend so much time on these silly little metaphysical laws?"   To the first and second, I have tried to explain these ideas to where they make sense, both for myself and the intrigued reader, but do not take away from the mystique. Some things in Yophas simply cannot be explained in a way that we would understand (see: Divinity and its effects on the Dream of Reality). The gods said, "I want it this way," and so it was.   To the third question, it's because metaphysics are badass.

Metaphysical Laws are badass. I don't know if these questions would go here, but how does our(the emaxian perception) "concept of time" present itself in Xeccamund, a place beyond reality and the design put in place? If someone where to form a connection to something beyond reality within the expanse named Xeccamund could they then have the tiniest bit of influence or be influenced by the designs time to at least the smallest degree? If Laithna exists with and without time what happens to the poor soul that manages to die in Xeccamund? Would there soul go anywhere? Would they actually die in the sense of the word we know it as? Who knows? If a villain formed a strong enough connection to an entity of Xeccamund could they even be killed? Some might say that is Anliceth's and her followers true purpose if such a day ever comes?
