Non-Lethal Damage
Sometimes an attacker wants to incapacitate a foe, rather than deal a killing blow. All attacks and damage are considered to have lethal intent unless explicitly stated otherwise by the attacker.
When dealing damage with a melee attack, or a spell or ability that deals only bludgeoning damage, you can declare your intent to deal non-lethal damage. When doing so, your target can only suffer Mild injuries, and does not begin dying as a result of damage from you. They can still fall unconscious and die when reduced to the appropriate number of negative hit points.
Damage from other sources might still cause lethal injury. For example, if Byron is attempting to knock a Goblin out, but Arthur lethally stabs the goblin while its hit points are negative, the goblin immediately begins dying.
