Mounts and Vehicles

A mount can help you move more quickly through the wilderness, but its primary purpose is to carry gear that would otherwise slow you down. The Land Mounts table shows each animal's speed and base carrying capacity.

Mounts with Vehicles

Nearly all land vehicles require an animal to pull them (some magical vehicles serve as exceptions). An animal pulling a land vehicle can move weight up to five times its base carrying capacity, including the weight of the vehicle. If multiple animals pull the same vehicle, they can add their carrying capacity together.

Barding

Barding is armor designed to protect an animal's head, neck, chest, and body. Any type of armor shown in the Armor section of this chapter can be purchased as barding. The cost is four times the equivalent armor made for humanoids, and it weighs twice as much.

Saddles

A saddle helps a rider keep their seat on a mount, and comes with a bit, a bridle, reins, and any other equipment needed to use the saddle. If you attempt to ride a mount without a saddle, you have disadvantage on any check you make to remain mounted. An exotic saddle is used for riding aquatic or flying mounts.

Exotic Mounts

Mounts other than those listed in this section might be found on Eltár, but they are not normally available for purchase. These include flying mounts and even aquatic mounts. Acquiring such a mount often means securing an egg and raising the creature yourself, making a bargain with a powerful entity, or negotiating with the mount itself.

Mount Training

Most conventional mounts can be ridden by anyone under ideal conditions, but those with training can more effectively control and leverage their mount over long distance and in difficult circumstances.

Aquatic, Land, or Flying Mounts

While riding an Aquatic, Land, or Flying mount that you lack training with, you experience the following effects.
  • No Traveling Activities. You cannot engage in Activities such as Avoiding Detection, Hustling, or Foraging while using your mounted speed.
  •
  • Saving Throws Affected. You have disadvantage on Reflex and Fortitude Saves.
  •
  • Fatigue During Travel. Any distance you travel counts towards both the mount's Fatigue Threshold, and your own.

Drawn Vehicles

The most common vehicles are drawn vehicles which require no special training to use. If you're steering a drawn vehicle, you gain the benefits of your mount training if you have training with the mount that's drawing the vehicle.

Chariot 200 gp 100 lb.

Large Vehicles

Other large vehicles such as ships or magical vehicles require training to control properly. If you're steering a large vehicle that you lack training with, you experience the following effects.
  • No Traveling Activities. You cannot engage in Activities such as Avoiding Detection, Hustling, or Foraging while using the vehicle's speed.
  •
  • Ability Checks Affected. You have Disadvantage on any ability checks to navigate, maintain or maneuver the vehicle.

Large and Complex Vehicles

If you have training with a certain kind of vehicle (land, flying or aquatic), you can add your training bonus to any check you make to control that kind of vehicle in difficult circumstances. Some vehicles are complex, and require training in order to be used at all. For example, a rowboat can be easily steered and propelled by a single character, even if they don't have training with Vehicles (water), a keelboat on the other hand, requires three crew members, of which at least one must be proficient with Vehicles (water).

Rowed Vessels

Keelboats and rowboats are used on lakes and rivers. If going downstream, add the speed of the current (typically 3 miles per hour) to the speed of the vehicle. These vehicles can't be rowed against any significant current, but they can be pulled upstream by draft animals on the shores. A rowboat weighs 100 pounds, in case adventurers carry it over land.
