Languages

The people of Eltar speak dozens of different languages, along with hundreds of dialects and regional variations. While a character can generally get by with Iraldi, also known as Common or the Common Tongue, knowing another language is vital in some regions. Being able to speak these tongues can help you with negotiation, spying on enemies, or just conducting simple commerce.   Languages are a secondary proficiency, and are sometimes used in Intelligence (Language) checks with the chosen language to read, translate, comprehend or transcribe complex uses of the Language being used in the check. Your Passive Rating with a Language determines your fluency with a language. How difficult a language is to learn is reflected in its Passive Rating, as shown in the Language Requirements by Category table.   Protagonists gain at least 3 Ranks to distribute in Languages of their choosing during character creation, though it's highly recommended that players ensure they share a language, which is most likely to be Common.
