Mesmerfowl (mez-murr-foal)
The mesmerfowl is a colourful bird with impractically large feathers on both its wings and tail, preventing it from taking flight from the ground or in dense woodland, effectively requiring it to fall from a potentially fatal height to get the necessary lift to glide. Whilst still capable of limited flight, it's clear that it's adapted to use its feathers more directly, with intricately detailed patterns that when fluttered provide a mesmeric effect, captivating both its predators and prey. They're native to Expin, though small flocks have successfully migrated to Stalvenrakh, where they continue to thrive.
Appearance
Mesmerfowl come in a variety of bright colours, the most common of which being reds, oranges & yellows, with the patterns on their feathers being significantly darker hues of the same colours. These patterns vary from bird to bird, but usually have some sort of spiral or eye motif. Gazing into these patterns whilst they're being ruffled is entrancing, and so direct eye contact should be avoided when the feathers are extended. If you have to look, try to focus on the mesmerfowl's small head, as the thicker feathers protruding somewhat like a flower from the top of their long kneck during this don't have the same hypnotic properties, and are believed to be a safeguard to prevent the mesmerfowl from charming itself. From head to tail, the mesmerfowl is roughly 70-80cm in length, with the tailfeathers being around 160cm long whilst the wingspan is a slightly smaller 140cm.
Diet & Behaviours
The peafowl likes to feast on rodents, many of which are easily caught at once within the hypnotic grasp of the mesmerfowl, during which potential predators are also affected, causing them to alert the mesmerfowl to their presence through the noises they make whilst in a dazed state. The full extent of the hypnotic control mesmerfowl have during this trance isn't fully tested, but is definitely capable of compelling movement towards & away from the peafowl, and plays a role in mesmerfowl reproduction. Mesmerfowls tend to travel in small flocks without any overarching hierarchy. When a female is ready to mate, they'll deliberately hypnotise a partner to fertilise their eggs before business carries on as usual. Studies have shown that the mothers do take into consideration the traits of the father before choosing them as a mate, but show no signs of having any loyalty to a single one.
