Kariteq Settlement in Elotia | World Anvil

Kariteq

Kariteq is one of the few well-established and generally less violent villages in Xzon. Located near the eastern shores of the Ethoc Basin, Kariteq is a centralized production hub consisting of a lumber mill, an ore mine, and a fruit orchard. Kariteq is nominally ruled by the Xzonic Champion, and it is considered part of the current Champion's holdings at all time. In effect, however, Kariteq is run by a nearly-free slave called the Mek.   Some speculate that Kariteq was founded a by a religious group in the ancient past of Laerdt'nah, before being raided and taken over by a Xzonic warlord early in Xzon's development. This does seem highly probably given that methodical and established natures of the orchards, the sturdy but plain construction of a few buildings scattered throughout Kariteq, and the old dock which extends in the Ethoc Basin (which sees almost no use). Since being taken over the Xzonic, additional tents and a few poorly-constructed buildings have been erected throughout the property. The main road that leads into Kariteq, coming from the east, always shows clear signs of warlord encampments including burned wood, destroyed earth, and animal carcasses.   Despite these nearby encampments, Kariteq itself is highly valued by the warlords and its safety is maintained at nearly all times through a careful balance of familial hostages. This "hostage situation" is a relatively recent development, with Kariteq previously acting as the main home of the Champion at all times, to protect it. Even though very few warlords care for any children they may have, whoever is the presumed "heir" of any given warband must be given over to work in Kariteq throughout their upbringing. This serves the purpose of protecting Kariteq, but also increasing relations between the heirs. The Mek, the "chief slave" who is tasked with looking over Kariteq, also has means of directly contacting the Champion at a moment's notice, and in the instance of an attack, the Mek could order the heirs to attack the warring band.   Kariteq is also extremely well staffed. Each warlord is expected to contribute an amount of slaves to Kariteq no less than half the size of their overall army (or slave) size (whichever is larger). Any warlord acting against these conditions is liable to be attacked the Champion and his forces, as well as any warlords attempting to gain the Champion's favour. Any warlord is allowed to approach Kariteq and ask for their share of the ore, wood, or food collected at Kariteq at a given time, though the amount they receive is based on how much of each has been collected and how many slaves they currently have in the village.
