Ebbant Stones

Ebbant Stones are artifacts of unknown origin that have mostly been discovered in eastern Tsrach and northeastern Endref. Ebbant stones show clear signs of construction (rather than being natural in origin), but the methods used to create ebbant stones has been lost (or erased). Due to the rarity of ebbant stones, they are highly valuable and often highly sought after by collectors and affluent patrons, though magical institutions are often also interested in studying them.
Careful eochs of study have shown that ebbant stones track and display the ebb and flow of magical currents beneath the surface of Elotia. Ebbant stones pulse and radiate coloured auras to show the current state of nearby currents, with all ebbant stones pulsing bright purple prior to miasmic eruptions that occur with little predictability or regularity.

Utility

As ebbant stones present magical currents under the surface of Elotia, they are often placed on a central dias that is visible within the confines of the larger space they are in. The only associated "use" required with an ebbant stone is to record any major changes in the auras it presents, and some small magical skill is required to detect and reads these auras.
Careful observers of these auras have been able to harness stronger magical currents to perform elevated magical feats and abilities, but predictability of magical surges and strong surface currents remains low, despite eochs of study.

Access & Availability

Ebbant stones are highly prized and thus tightly controlled. While some institutions allow for on-site study of ebbant stones in their possession, most other ebbant stones reside in the private collection of merchants, rulers, and other influential people who can afford their auction cost.

Complexity

Ebbant stones appear to function with no input required from any other devices or any kind of personal interaction. The technology that governs the creation of ebbant stones has been lost to time, and no new ebbant stones have been created by any nation in recorded epochs.

Discovery

The first ebbant stone was discovered shortly after Endref's founding, in 384 VL. While some other ebbant stones may have been discovered before this by those inhabiting the Tsrachian Wastes or Vetra, it is impossible to determine as records of such discovery do not exist. Within Endref, a small cache of ebbant stones was discovered by a miner following a vein of silver ore who broke through a thin wall and entered into a constructed cave, finding the ebbant stones scattered across the ruins of rotted table.
Though these were the first ebbant stones ever found and studied, it was later found that these ebbant stones were incomplete and complete ebbant stones discovered in later eochs would make it easier to study their purpose and function.
