Zephyros

Zephyros is an imposing mountainous island whose peaks are perpetually wreathed in snowstorms. Black volcanic rock and veins of glimmering gemstones give the mountains an eerie, otherworldly beauty. Few dare to explore the caves that riddle the mountains, for rumors about of ancient guardians that protect whatever remains within. Some say the mountains hold forgotten ruins of a civilization that mastered the skies long before the islands floated. The main settlements live in the valleys where it is most safe although the weather is the extreme opposite. Thick, tangled, jungle land is interspersed with temples and a large spice trading market.

Geography

Zephyros is a land of extremes, where towering, snow-capped mountains loom over dense, steaming jungles below. The contrast between the icy peaks and the lush, tangled valleys makes the island feel like two worlds forced together, each resisting the other.
The upper reaches of Zephyros are dominated by jagged mountains of black volcanic rock, their slopes streaked with veins of luminescent gemstones that shimmer faintly even in the dimmest light. These peaks are battered by relentless blizzards, making them treacherous for all but the hardiest explorers. Many caves and tunnels wind through the mountains, their depths whispered to house ancient relics and long-forgotten secrets—but few who enter return to confirm the tales. Some believe these ruins belong to an ancient civilization that once controlled the skies, their knowledge lost to time.
In stark contrast, the valleys and lowlands of Zephyros are lush, humid, and teeming with life. The land here is a tangled mass of towering jungle trees, creeping vines, and thick undergrowth, creating a near-impenetrable wilderness. Hidden within the dense foliage, remnants of ornate temples and weathered stone altars stand as silent testaments to past civilizations. Some of these ruins have been reclaimed by the people of Zephyros, repurposed as homes, trading posts, or places of worship.
One of the largest settlements, Emberhold, is built along a river that cuts through the jungle, serving as the heart of Zephyros’ spice trade. The markets here overflow with rare herbs, exotic fruits, and potent spices, all of which are highly sought after throughout the monarchy. Despite the dangers of the island, merchants and travelers brave the treacherous terrain for the wealth Zephyros offers.

Climate

Zephyros’ climate is as unpredictable as its terrain. The mountain peaks are locked in perpetual winter, plagued by violent snowstorms, biting winds, and sudden avalanches. The air is thin, and the cold is merciless, allowing only the hardiest of creatures—and possibly something far older—to survive in the frozen heights.
The valleys and lowlands, however, are the complete opposite. The thick jungle experiences suffocating humidity, torrential rains, and sweltering heat. The air is heavy with the scent of spices, damp earth, and blooming flowers, but also with the ever-present hum of insects and calls of unseen creatures lurking within the undergrowth.
Zephyros is also home to a strange phenomenon, a powerful convergence of storms that frequently forms along the mid-altitude ridges. These roiling thunderclouds crackle with unnatural energy, making air travel over Zephyros dangerous and unpredictable. Some scholars believe the storms are linked to the rumored lost civilization, their presence an ancient defense mechanism—or a lingering remnant of forgotten magic.
