The Antler
The Antler is a major river in central Talevir, in the territory of Deer Valley.
The river connects two of Talevir's largest cities: Hartsport, the regional capital of Deer Valley, and Stagshead, The Seat of The Realm. Stagshead is situated at the confluence of the two main tributaries and the farthest upriver that is easily navigable, while Hartsport is located on the eastern bank of the river's discharge into Talevir Bay. Tremendous commerce moves up and down the 335km/208mi main body of the river to and from Stagshead, while still more goods are sent downriver from beyond.
Main Tributaries:
The two main tributaries flow from either side of the mountains around The Cracked Tooth in the northern reach of The Spine mountain range and meet at Stagshead. The Northpointe Antler meanders through the forested hills north of Deer Valley in gentle sways, allowing for lumber and hides to make their way downriver with ease and some barges to be towed upriver from the shore, along the High Road. The Eastpointe Antler rushes vigorously from a great mountain gorge south of The Cracked Tooth, flowing with enough vigor to make transit downriver slightly difficult and upriver travel only possible overland via the straighter but steeper Eastpoint Road or gentler but longer Triboar Trail. The Eastpointe provides ample power for waterwheels used for the lumber mills, forges, and fruit presses of Eastpoint Mills.
Flooding:
While The Antler hugs the hills along the western edge of Deer Valley, the valley that the territory takes its name from is the floodplain for the river. In years with a great deal of winter snow in the north of The Spine mountain range, the following late summer's peak of the rainy season can see The Antler swell into a series of pocket lakes and river braids flowing from the bend south of Stagshead to multiple points in a wide delta connecting Hartsport to Fawndock. The wooded Bay Road between Hartsport and Fawndock and the High Road between Hartsport and Stagshead are built as reinforced levees connected with broad boardwalks and bridges that accommodate these more extreme flood events while avoiding some risks of highway banditry during normal river flows. Running up the middle of the valley to connect Fawndock to the High Road south of Stagshead, the Low Road is completely flooded during high-flood years but makes due with low bridges crossing the many creeks and streams that typically just swell across the valley in normal summers.
