The Crystal Sea

Geography

The Crystal Sea, the large bay in Eleros' North-East, is a sheltered, saltwater bay. It is relatively shallow for its size, although ships can easily traverse its depths. The Crystal Sea takes its name from the beautiful, clean water within, which is due to the minimal nutrients provided to this bay - it shares borders with the stony, infertile lands of Trakkenstram and Atreius. The Crystal Sea has been contested by nations since the Buckaneers first landed, and the Sea has become synonymous with control of all Eleros. This is more circumstantial than anything, but this idea is reinforced by the fact that all attacks on the Capital of Atreius, Valaneer, must either cross rocky, dead land, or come by the sea. This has led to the building of fortifications at the narrow mouth to the bay, and from these fortifications have risen the great castle of Rostanton, a key oint of control for the Atreian Empire.

History

The Crystal Sea was first discovered by the Buckaneers Three, the three Kellanari explorers who came to settle Eleros before any others. They landed at the sea only after sailing around the coast of what is now Seilan, and they mapped out the entire bay - no mean feat, considering the size of it. Noting the clean water and temperate climate, the Buckaneers decided to settle here, and they called the city they built Valaneer, after the second Buckaneer. Indeed, that is the history documented by the Kellanari Settlers, but before they came, it was the Warlock Monastery of Filander - of water and strength - who called the crystal sea home. The Warlocks made their home in the caves most inland of the bay, carving out a sandstone dwelling. Of course, when they were scared away by the settlers, the Rock Drakes flew south and made the caves their home, and they remain there today.
