Kakiobre

Kakiobre is a town near the western border of the Kingdom of Erdantia, which divides it and the Duchy of Atlin. It is famed for the library that sits next to it, the Kakiobre Library, which is the second biggest library in the world by number of titles. The town, library, and surrounding land is owned by Lord Hal Semma

Demographics

The dominant ethnicity of Kakiobre is Mainland Erdant, although the proportion of Cordaintines is large when compared to the rest of Erdantia, owing to its proximity to the Erdantia-Atlin border.

Government

Kakiobre is owned by Lord Hal Semma, who owns the town, the nearby library, and an area of land around the two. Semma is assisted by two clerks hired by him. He ultimately answers to King Ulric Tyler and must carry out most requests made by him.

Defences

Kakiobre has a single watchtower on the western side, which is manned at night. It also carries a beacon, which is lit in the event of an attack, or if the next beacon along (in this case, Haevra, a town on the Erdantia-Atlin border) is lit. More recently, a standing guard has taken up position there to defend against any attacks in the War of Eserae.

Industry & Trade

Kakiobre mainly sustains itself from income from the library, which provides for the import of fish, meat, metals, and other things vital to the town through taxation of library subscription fees, of which there are hundreds from scholars and historians across the nation. A large portion (around 15%) work at the library itself, while the rest tend to work in agriculture.

Infrastructure

Kakiobre has a fairly basic infrastructure. It has no sewage system, and its roads are mainly dirt, with a cobbled main road going through the middle, where it meets a small courtyard. This courtyard has a small well, and space for several market stalls.

History

Kakiobre was founded in 1425 as part of the expansion westwards by Erdantia happening at the time. It was quite poor as it had no important exports. However, in 1512, when the Kakiobre Library was built as a governmental records facility, Kakiobre became significantly more wealthy. This continued until 1532, when the land was bought up by Lady Erman Senna, who converted the facility into a public library, one of only three in Thorn at the time. With the passing of Lady Semma in 1573, the town went to her son, Hal.
