State of the Game - 1997 to 2002
Overview
The state of the game articles explain at a high level the main features of the game in a given time periods. While some minor changes may escape the scope of these articles (bug fixes, for instance), others may be highlighted if they are deemed worthy of note. In general, these periods end when major revisions to the game take place, almost universally due to a paid expansion pack.
World
From its very launch, Elder Tale boasted an enormous world built using a mix of real geography (but with half the area, or roughly 70% the distance between points) and fantasy influences. It launched as a serious game which avoided breaking the fourth wall or making pop culture references that did would not neatly fit the theme.
From its beginning, Elder Tale Online featured classical monsters from myth, including dragons, giants, undead, lycanthropes, and others. Magic has always been a key point of the game, as have medieval weapons such as swords, axes, and bows.
The early graphics would be considered dated by modern standards. At the time, though, Elder Tale Online was a best-in-class game, delivering an immersive 3d experience with a variety of camera options. The most popular of these were first person and an over-the-shoulder view which could be swiftly zoomed out and rotated to gain situational awareness (or for taking a screen shot). Elder Tale Online was keen to invest in its graphics over time, which sometimes brought conflicts with those who had a nostalgic ache for earlier times (or who had bad graphics cards!)
