The caster projects a crackling bolt of blue lightning toward a single creature within range. The target must make a saving throw to avoid being struck by the lightning. If the save fails, the target suffers 1d6 lightning damage plus an additional 1d6 damage per two caster levels (maximum +9d6), and a continuous arc of electricity is established between the caster and the target. Beginning on the following round, so long as the target remains within range and the caster continues to concentrate on the spell, the arc automatically inflicts 1d6 lightning damage plus an additional 1d6 damage per four caster levels (maximum +4d6) on the caster's turn. The spellcaster can maintain the arc with minimal concentration; thus, he or she can move at half normal speed (but not cast other spells). The spell also ends if the target moves beyond the spell's range or if a solid barrier completely blocks the arc.
A beam of crackling blue energy lances toward a creature within range, forming a sustained arc of lightning between you and the target. Make a Ranged Spell Attack against it. On a hit, the target takes 2d12 Lightning damage.
On each of your subsequent turns, you can take a Bonus Action to deal 1d12 Lightning damage to the target automatically, even if the first attack missed. The spell ends if the target is ever outside the spell's range or if it has Total Cover from you.
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a higher level spell slot, increase the initial damage by 1d12 for each slot level above its base level.
