Botari
Source: Elaris Unbroken
The people of Botar dwell beneath the endless skies upon sweeping savannahs run through with winding rivers, dense jungles, and rugged highlands where great beasts still roam much as they did in ages long past. Life in these lands is rarely easy, and the Botari have endured by relying upon one another. To a Botari, family extends beyond blood, instead encompassing clan, tribe, ancestors, and even the animals and spirits that watch over them. Individual achievement is celebrated, but never at the expense of the community.
The most defining feature of Botari life is their relationship with the Great Spirits. Across Botar, countless stories are told of mighty spiritual beings who embody the strength, wisdom, and majesty of all the natural world. The Thunder Bird, the Eternal Pack, the Endless Herd, the Wise Watcher, the Unwavering One, the Vigilant One, the Unmatched Pride, and the Strider are revered not as distant gods, but as living guardians who guide the destinies of the people and wildlife of all of Botar. Their names are spoken with reverence, and their deeds are among the first stories taught to every child.
Upon reaching adulthood, every Botari undertakes a sacred pilgrimage. Alone, they travel into the wilderness seeking the favor of one of the Great Spirits. Those who are accepted receive a spiritual sigil upon their left hand and, in time, a spirit-bound companion that will remain with them for the rest o their lives. These companions are far more than animals. They are protectors, guides, and living symbols of the bond between the mortal and spiritual worlds. To lose such a companion is considered a tragedy equal to or even greater than losing a member of one's own family. The animal is bound to the soul of the Botari through the spiritual sigil, so its lifespan is extended to match that of the human, both coming to their natural end within only minutes of each other. If the Botari ever dies prematurely, however, this will also kill the companion.
The Botari possess a deep respect for both the seen and unseen worlds, but this reverence is paired with an extreme suspicion of psionics and those who use them. While many cultures view psychic gifts as merely another form of power, the Botari often regard them as dangerous and unnatural. Tales of minds twisted by unseen influences are common throughout their folklore, and many tribes teach protective rites intended to shield both body and spirit from psychic intrusion. Many are taught these unnatural powers are a direct blessing—or curse—from Xolotli, the Great Trickster.
Though outsiders often mistake them for a single people, the Botari are perhaps the least united of the human people, divided amongst countless tribes, kingdoms, and clans spread across the vast lands of Botar. A river trader, a jungle hunter, a mountain shepherd, and a savannah warrior may live vastly different lives, and those of different tribes may perform vastly different rites, even potentially seeing one another's rites as disrespectful. Yet all share a believe that a person is not measured by what the possess, but by the strength of their spirit, the honor they bring to their people, and the legacy they leave for those that will follow them.
