Thay Protectorate

It is not known exactly when or why otherworldly invaders first appeared in Faerun. It is known where - the shores of the Gbor Nor, also known as Brightstar Lake, to Thay's east. To the shock of Thay's High Regent, the lich Szass Tam, the dragon princes of the land allowed the invaders to simply pass by unchallenged. In a desperate play for time, Tam accelerated several long dormant plans and absorbed the nations of Thesk, Aglarond and Narfell, forming the Thay Protectorate, and alerted the other kingdoms of Faerun to the approaching threat.

Thay is a land of misery, mistrusted by all, led by a lich with known ambitions to rule over a world of the obedient dead. The initial response, therefore, was apathy. Let Thay burn. Their tone changed when Szass Tam allowed several of the marauders of the Divine Order through his frontline defences and into the unprotected lands of Mulhorand and Halruaa, where it became clear very quickly that the invaders were not going to discriminate between Thay necromancers and any other magical practitioner. They were here to wipe the very idea of Wizards and other arcane spellcasters out of the multiverse itself, starting with Faerun.

Thay has therefore found itself in a position no one would have thought it would be in the early 16th Century - bulwark of the free people of Faerun. Entire tribes of Hill giants and trolls are being charmed and herded into vast kennels hastily built on the eastern borders. Elite cadres of Neo-orogs, loyal half-ogre warriors, openly train new orcish recruits. Liches and vampires train apprentices from Narfell in demonic summoning, while the Griffon Legion and the Black Unicorn Cavalry have trippled their number. And on the border of Thesk, Szass Tam prepares another ring of dread to attempt one last, desperate spell if Thay falls...

Thay is a rich nation, that is capable of supplying rare and powerful magical items. They are buying Soil for generous prices.
