Major language groups and dialects

Mainland Demksland is former of the space between the Ghost and Pinnochal Mountain ranges. The vast majority of the people living here are descended from the Daneka people who crossed the Pinnochal Mountains with Astrid Waymaker. They speak Daneshi as a language.   Between the Pinnochal Mountains and the eastern coast of Eklaran lies the province of Pferiene. Most of the residents from this area are descended from the Feiner people. For much of the history of Demksland the people of this area spoke the closely related language of Pfedric. As trade and communication expanded between Pferiene and Demksland the nation was absorbed into Demksland as a province. Shortly after this the Pfedric language began to merge with Daneshi. Today the Pfedrin speak Daneshi with an accent. They also use Pfedric words for many Daneshi nouns.

Coming of Age Rites

Daneshi youth are considered of age when they reach 19 years of age. At this point they assume many of the responsibilities of adulthood, including moving into their own house and taking on a full time job, however they are not considered full adults until three years later when they reach age 22. These three years are considered a time of exploration for Daneshi youth where they discover more about themselves and who they want to be. This is usually the time where courting takes place, although it is common for youth to begin the process earlier, and many Daneshi get married during this time.

Funerary and Memorial customs

Daneshi deceased are buried in grave yards. They receive a funeral and a grave marker. The Daneshi wear plain black clothing to funerals. Black is the color of the dead in Daneshi culture and the clothing is intended to be undecorated so that any beauty in the day may come from the life that the deceased lived.

Common Myths and Legends

  • Astrid Waymaker- Astrid Waymaker sits in the rather unique category of being both a myth and a historical figure. She was a real person, however, her legend has been so blown out of proportion that it is now hard to distinguish fact from fiction.
  • Historical figures

    • Astrid Waymaker- Despite the myth surrounding Astrid it is known that for one reason or another she did lead the Daneka people across the Pinnochal mountains into mainland Demksland. For this reason she is considered the founder of the Daneshi.
    • Astor Waymaker- Astor Waymaker, great-grandson of Astrid, is known for discovering a more southern pass through the Pinnochal mountains that could be used most of the year. It is because of him that trade resumed between the Feiner and Daneka peoples. This was the beginning of lasting peaceful relations between the two groups.

    Ideals

    Beauty Ideals

The ideal of beauty for both men and women in Daneshi culture is to be tall with broad shoulders. It is considered to be attractive to have some weight but not so much as to be unhealthy. This is due to both a long history of food insecurity and the Daneshi's shared identity as a warrior people. As the nation begins to industrialize and as food availibility becomes more widespread the attractiveness of being overweight is starting to fade.   For women it is considered to be attractive to have long wavy, hair.

    Courtship Ideals

Young people in Demksland will often court many people at the same time and slowly narrow down their choices until they find someone they would like to marry. Higher class nobility will often even make lists of potential suitors and work from that list This may include hiring a matchmaker.

    Relationship Ideals

The Daneshi think of marriage as a partnership. Both parties are expected to support each other and contribute to the relationship and the family. The Daneshi also prioritize love in relationships. They consider love to be the inspiration to put in the work towards this partnership. Ideal partners support each others goals and struggles.
