Chodh Urokh

Center of Civilized Orcdom

Demographics

The entire static population of the City of Chodh Urokh are orcs, 98% of the Iron Top variety. The city has sixteen arcane houses. The peace is kept by 20 guardsmen, and there are 5 advocates to assist with legal matters. For those more concerned about their soul, there are 109 clergymen and 1 priests. Perhaps due to the colder temperatures at the altitude of the city in the Iron Tops, clothiers of different varieties dominate local trade.   Profession Breakdown: Bakers 6; Butchers 1; Furriers 14; Magic Shops 1; Roofers 1; Tanners 1; Barbers 6; Carpenters 8; Glovemakers 1; Maidservants 12; Ropemakers 1; Taverns 10; Bathers 1; Chandlers 4; Harness-makers 1; Masons 2; Rugmakers 2; Watercarriers 3; Beer-sellers 1; Chicken Butchers 2; Hatmakers 1; Mercers 3; Saddlers 2; Weavers 8; Blacksmiths 1; Coopers 2; Hay Merchants 1; Old Clothes 11; Scabbardmakers 2; Wine-sellers 2; Bleachers 1; Copyists 2; Illuminators 1; Painters 2; Sculptors 1; Bookbinders 1; Cutlers 1; Inns 2; Pastrycooks 10; Shoemakers 27; Woodsellers 1; Booksellers 1; Doctors 2; Jewelers 5; Plasterers 2; Spice Merchants 3; Buckle Makers 1; Fishmongers 3; Locksmiths 1; Pursemakers 3; Tailors 19.   The city has 16 noble houses. Government

A ruling council of sixteen, one representative from each of the arcane houses elect a chieftain once every ten years (or sooner if the elected official needs to be removed). They wield absolute authority over the Iron Top orcs in most matters during their tenure, but can be vetoed by a 75% majority of the ruling council (12 votes). The ruling council also hold command over the militia, ensuring that the chosen leader has limits to their power. Coherence in long term planning has not yet taken root in Iron Top society, and shifting ideas and fashions have led to a piecemeal charter. Despite the pretensions of the sixteen houses, Chodh Urokh is a run down city for the most part with barely functioning sanitation leading to a rather pungent smell.

Defences

Unassailable on three sides and difficult to reach under any circumstances, the strong wooden gates blocking entrance to the city have proven more than sufficient to repel any loose threat that has appproached the city. They have yet to be tested in any meaningful fashion.

Infrastructure

The city is built into a downward sloping caldera, high rock protects three sides of the city and a sturdy wooden barrier, heavily guarded, marks the lone egress in and out of the city. There are abundant thermal sources for the city to harness, some have been tapped more succesfully than others and life within Chudh Urokh is certainly more comfortable than a nomadic existence which, though remembered by the dying elders who were barely more than babes-in-arms before the settlement of the city, is told in stories to have been an embarrasment to the orcs.   Filth runs in the streets of Chodh Urokh, though it is literally running through the streets to gather in the cesspit at the lowest point of the caldera, where the liquid waste drains into the porous rock and the solid waster is dumped, treated, then ferried as fertilizer to the Iron Top Pastures.   On the higher ground of the caldera the Fortress sits overlooking the rest of the city. This imposing, angular building not only houses the chieftain, but serves as the seat of government for the Iron Top Orcs. Just beneath the fortress, the barracks are located.   From the east end of the caldera, a rudimentary aqueduct brings fresh water into a large rectangular reservoir that fulfils the city's need for fresh water. The sixteen arcane houses surround the reservoir, ostensibly to protect the water. The streets themselves are a mix of dirt, gravel and shale, though the main road in and out of Chodh Urokh is a smooth path of obsidian formed by long cooled magma.
