Orothris, the Weaving Eternal

Orothris, the Weaving Eternal, is one of the two gods born at the start of the universe, when Einas the primordial deity split in two and created matter and magic. As such, it stands somewhat apart from the rest of the Kaladean gods, being seen are more cryptic and mystical, further away from the mortal races than the other deities. This can be seen even in the domains it rules over, as Orothris is the god of Creation, Time and Destiny, and is as such more concerned with grander affairs than the mortal ones. The inhabitants of Eina rarely if ever encroach upon its realm, so far and above the reach of mortals. More often he is content to maintain the balance of the world, keeping Destruction at bay and the flow of Time undisturbed.

Sacred Attributes

The symbol of Orothris is known as the Twin Knot or Weaver Knot (Didos), representing both the eternal flow of time and the “Weaving” of creation and famously used by Eridian sailors for protection. The Moth is its Favoured Animal, as its larva supposedly produces the silk from which Orothris weaves creation, while its Favoured Colour is White, colour of light, silk and the Eridean desert. Its Favoured Weapon is the Longbow, the first of which he crafted from his own cocoon to defend against his twin Kaiman.

Description

Orothris is universally and uniformly represented as a giant white moth. It, like its twin, is not known to take a humanoid form, or any other form. Even then, the deity is hardly ever encountered, and it can hard to distinguish between tales of encounters with Orothris and the overblown exaggeration of faithful sighting a perfectly mundane white moth.   Nonetheless, it is undeniable that Orothris travels Eina like all other deities, and can be recognized thanks to supernatural aspects given to his forms, such as a giant size or the shedding of bright, white light. Orothris is also known to have taken the form of an entire swarm of moths at least once to appear to mortals.

Personality

The mind of the Weaving Eternity can appear completely alien at first, seemingly estranged from the mortal world of the inhabitant of Eina. But from what can be gathered from theological studies and testimonies, Orothris is, if not benevolent, at least not evil or cruel. Its mind seems simply wholly dedicated to the balance and preservation of the world, which most certainly includes its inhabitant, acting accordingly at all time. It seems able of feeling passing concerns for mortal affairs, but that never seem to last long once its presence is no longer necessary. Other gods seem to respect Orothris, if only because of the vast power it seems to possess, and the result of its divine intervention are far more often than not beneficial for mortal races as a whole.

Worship

As one of the first gods of Eina, Orothis’ cult is one of the few believed to predate the dragons. There is evidence pointing to the fact that Orothris was already worshiped in northern Eridia possibly hundreds of thousands of years before the dragon’s arrival, and survived through their reign amongst the enslaved population before seeing a resurgence amongst the elves of the Numensari and the Myrin Kingdom, being established as the later’s state religion.   Despite this ancient history, the worship of Orothris is among the lesser known in the Kaladean Empire, shrouded in mysticism and cryptic rituals that only a few chosen learn. In the image of their god, followers of Orothris often care very little for mortal affairs, preferring to focus their attention on “higher” concerns. They strive to understand their god, or Time and Destiny, while always working toward preserving the balance of the world. Its clergy is mostly composed of hermits and monks, people who have chosen to look inward rather than outward to better understand themselves and the world around them. Some are students of the arcane seeking an alternate path, away from the academic studies. Other, gifted in way that have distanced them from the brethren. All have chosen to pledge themselves to the pursuit of harmony.   In the Empire itself, Orothris’ worship is commonly practiced only in and around Hemetrea, where it originated. There, at the heart of Eridian culture, Orothris and its twin always had a prominent role as chief deities before the reformation of the Kaladean Pantheon, and to this day are still held with deep reverence by the people of the city. This can easily be seen in the many moth carvings and imagery in the city, especially around the Great Temple dedicated to the twin gods of the city. This building with walls made of white stone and ground covered in black marble, massive and labyrinthine but seemingly empty, is the center of the worship and one of the few physical place of worship dedicated to the deity. Orothris does not dwell in it, or hasn’t yet be found, but this does not discourage its most zealous followers from wandering in the empty halls, meditating in silence sometimes for weeks on end.
