Gorgoth, the Unfettered Wrath

Also known as the Lord of Beasts or the Unfettered Wrath, Gorgoth is the God of Wild Beasts and Untamed Nature. Ruling over the vast stretches of land between civilisation, he is a feared god whose fury is easily provoked and near unstoppable, an unrelenting embodiment of savagery. A force of chaos, Gorgoth is the manifestation of what many would call the dark aspect of complete and utter freedom, cruel and senseless chaos fuelled by impetuous, animalistic instinct. Liberty put before even common sense, steeped in egoism, vice and disdain for the very idea of order. He is Nature in all of its violence, all of its hostility, and all of its dangers.

Sacred Attributes

Gorgoth’s Favoured Animal is the Boar, famous for the unrelenting ravages it can cause to whatever find itself in its path. His Favoured Colour is Brown, the colour of soil, bark and fur. His Sacred Symbol is the Broken Chain (Trymmatalys), representing both his unbound nature and the destruction of the civilisation, and his Sacred Weapon is the Great Club, a simple tool fit for violence.

Description

As the God of Wildlife, it comes to no surprise that Gorgoth most often appears in the guise of a beast. As a matter of fact, he is one of the few gods who seems to eschew a humanoid form unless absolutely necessary, and even then he prefers to take on the animal-like appearance of the Beastfolks. Anyway, no matter his appearance, Gorgoth will always be an exceptionally massive member of his species, especially when it comes to the natural weapons that they bear, be it horns, claws or tusks.   When taking a humanoid form, Gorgoth will be towering even above the other member of the chosen race, with simple clothing and a muscle-bound body covered in scars which he displays with pride. He speaks loudly and with a deep voice, his demeanour full of hostility and restlessness.

Personality

Nothing matters to Gorgoth beyond personal freedom. No rule, no moral and certainly no law. He despises order beyond what emerges naturally, seeing civilisation on a grand scale as an insult and a threat to the sanctity of absolute liberty. Beyond that, Gorgoth is like a dark mirror of the wild, violent and cruel, embodying everything dangerous about nature while displaying very little of the good that comes from it. As a matter of fact, perhaps the only major quality he is usually recognised for is his absolute hatred of imprisonment or servitude in any shape of form. This is what many who see the god in a more favourable way cling to. He is a breaker of chains, a twisted guardian of nature and freedom whose ideal is tainted by dark intent and violent impulses.   Giving credence to this argument is the fact that despite his chaotic nature, Gorgoth rarely attack unprovoked. It happens certainly, but more often than not what is believed to be a wanton attack can be traced back to some perceived slight of some sort toward the deity. Not that it provides much comfort to those affected, as Gorgoth is notoriously easy to anger and prone to long periods of unbridled fury. Ultimately, he is just a powerful force of chaos and destruction whose action often reflect very little beyond animosity and violence, much like the wilderness he claims as his kingdom.

Worship

Despite Gorgoth’s general hostility, there are some who worship him either in hope of avoiding his wrath, or in the contrary to use it to fuel their own ambition. The formers are mostly composed of those that live off the wilderness or on the borders of civilisation. Hunters, foragers and foresters, praying and giving offerings to Gorgoth as a sort of trade against whatever bounty they claim from his kingdom. This worship is often based in fear more than respect, founded on a promise of violent retaliation for those that would not give Gorgoth his due, no matter how hypocrite in may be coming from one that calls himself a champion of freedom. Offerings often come in the form of a portion of the bounty, be it a portion of meat from a dead prey or a pile of berries gathered on the way. The quality of the piece given is of importance of-course, with an offering of greater value possibly earning the worshipper the admittedly limited favours of Gorgoth while a sub-par one might be seen as an insult, and make the poor soul the target of the violent god.   The other kind of worshippers of Gorgoth are those that have embraced his ways. Anarchist, hermits and criminals who make their way into the wild not out of necessity but as a choice to escape the constraint of society. It is from these lot that much of the clergy of Gorgoth emerges, seeing the deity as a protector, a barrier between them and civilisation. Often druids or druid-like, they believe in the same values as him, holding freedom as sacred and wilderness as the perfect, natural state of the world. Unsurprisingly, coming from a god that despises organisation to its core, the clergy of Gorgoth is for the most part completely decentralised. Its priest and priestess as sufficiently low in number to prevent congregation, a fact that is not helped by the usually anti-social nature that drove them into the worship of their god. Most simply erect small shrines where they dwell, tending to the wild around them and very rarely interacting with the wider world. There are however rare exceptions, instances where a place becomes a gathering ground for Gorgoth worshippers. The most famous and largest of those is his Great Temple near Pyria. Deep into the forested island, massive structures emerge from the ground, fused trunks of giant trees adorned with animal bones and other materials of the woods. In it dwell what comes the closest to leadership Gorgoth will tolerate, druids and priestesses who have claimed their place at the top. There it is said that even Gorgoth sometime dwells and listens to those that earned his attention.
