The Whirling Straits

Set in the twisting maelstrom of Eien's wildest seas, the tropical islands of the Whirling Straits are a sight to behold, brimming with both beauty and danger. Where once bustling settlements and naval depots thrived, ruins now stand as enigmatic reminders of a bygone era, and where magical corruption has warped once gentle creatures into fearsome, otherworldly beasts. The magic of the ancient Sovathy once held sway here, before the Reckoning War. Now, without it's tenders, the islands have been twisted by the energies that once sustained them.

The islands themselves are a diverse array of landscapes, each one with its unique allure. Some boast pristine, sandy beaches that stretch for miles, kissed by the warm, golden rays of the sun. Others, such as the fell island of Sorne, possess an atmosphere that is heavy and oppressive, as if an unseen force lingers in the air, carrying a weight of ancient secrets and forgotten sorrows. Thick, dark clouds often gather overhead, casting an even darker shadow on the landscape and hinting at the potential for storms to come.

Beyond the beaches of the treasure islands, most islands are blanketed in dense, lush rainforests. Towering trees with vibrant foliage reach for the sky, their canopy creating a natural cathedral of greenery. Rays of sunlight pierce through the foliage, illuminating the forest floor, where exotic flowers bloom in a riot of colors, and rare, magical herbs hide among the undergrowth. Despite all of it's beauty, however, the wild magic of the Whirling Straits has caused corruption to seep into the very fabric of nature. Once-harmless creatures have been transformed into nightmarish beasts, twisted by the unnatural energies that saturate the islands. Some may bear a passing resemblance to their former selves, but they now possess enhanced abilities, terrifying features, and a malevolence that assures few survivors live to spread the warning. Academic explorers from the Royal Academy have tried many times to catalog the changes wrought on the flora and fauna of the Whirling Straits, but like the far less patrician scavengers of Smuggler's Rest & Dragon's Bottom, few of them live long enough to see the end of their research.

Among these awe-inspiring landscapes lie the remnants of the Ancient Sovathy civilization. The ruins they left behind are marvels of architecture and mysticism, with towering spires, intricate carvings, and vibrant frescos magically adhered to the stones. Explorers and adventurers from all corners of the world are drawn to the islands in search of Sovathy artifacts and lost knowledge, but few ever return, as the ruins hold secrets that can be as perilous as they are rewarding. Still, some have made a name and a fortune for themselves picking over the bones of the dead - human, suceran, sovathy - it doesn't matter. These relic 'experts' command a hefty price for their services and the artifacts they deliver.
