Ostorrok Species in Eien | World Anvil

Ostorrok

A large bipedal/quadrupedal herbivore around 8 meters (26 feet) long, ostorrok are found in desert environments.

The ostorrok's most striking feature is its unique mode of locomotion. When spooked, it runs gracefully on its powerful hind legs, exhibiting an incredible agility despite its bulky frame. Males of the species are known to possess thickened skull plates and large horns that are used for defense and display.

It has two forelimbs which it uses to browse and two powerful hind legs connected to the classic 'bird hips' of Earth's theropods. The forelimbs are equipped with sharp, curved claws that are adept at gripping and stripping vegetation with precision. These claws allow the Ostorrok to easily tear apart tough desert plants to reach the nutrient-rich interior, forming a significant portion of its diet. When threatened, it can strike out with swift and precise slashes, delivering powerful blows to potential predators or adversaries.

The Ostorrok's body is adorned with a dense layer of thick plates, which provide excellent protection against potential predators and the harsh desert environment. These plates are a combination of bony structures and keratinous growths, forming a formidable armor that shields the Ostorrok's vital organs. The plates are usually a mixture of earthy-red tones, blending seamlessly with the desert landscape to provide natural camouflage.

In the desert environment, where resources can be scarce and competition for survival is intense, the Ostorrok has evolved a complex social structure. It is a highly social species and forms tight-knit herds of related, same-gender individuals. These herds are led by a dominant matriarch or patriarch, who guides the group's movements and ensures the safety of its members. Among the female herds, young males may remain until they reach reproductive age, where they are then run off and must join a bachelor herd.

Interestingly, the Ostorrok's intelligence and adaptability have led to cooperative interactions with other species. Young ostorrok's are notoriously mischevious and often engage in interspecies play at the communal watering holes and riversides. Ostorroks have been noted to assist other species when they observe others under threat, and intervene during predatory attacks. Among themselves, their social structure is remarkably similar to sentient species - displaying rare capacity for compassion and memory. When a beloved member of the herd dies, those left behind will mourn the lost individual by "burying" the body with sand and stones, often keeping vigil over the body for a week or more. And just as sentient species visit the gravesites of their lost loved ones, ostorrok visit the bones of their dead for years to come.

Among the sentient species that call the deserts of Eien home, befriending and working with an ostorrok herd is one of the first avenues to success that their harsh climate demands. They are often utilized as beasts of burden, with transient young males being the primary source of riding animals obtained by races such as the Ti'nisin. Adult females are typically retained by the nomads only when one is injured and unable to return to her home herd. Caring for a female ostorrok is considered a divine gift to the Ti'nisin - with one female providing enough milk (and future male progeny the nomads train and later release into the wild) to support an entire clan.

Ostorrok get along well with the Ti'nisin horses and act as sentry for their valuable herdmates. They do not, however, appear to like cows or oxen very much and must be kept separate from them.
