Lady Olivia Belmore Character in Eien | World Anvil

Lady Olivia Belmore

Lady Olivia Belmore (a.k.a. Liv)

One of the primary characters in the upcoming Sylltiad novels - Olivia is an uncomplicated girl living in a complicated sitation. She possesses powers no one around her understands, even within the great Royal Academy, and finds herself watched closely as a result. What was once a carefree, outgoing girl has become a stern and controlled one - prone to dangerous visions and chilling visitations from beings beyond the Dreaming.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Olivia could be considered a stunning specimen by the conventional observer. Her features are well-proportioned and finely carved, lending her a classic beauty when she is relaxed or, more commonly, sleeping. That said, her expression is almost always pulled into a stern countenance better suited on a woman twice her years. 'Grumpy' would be the sweet way to describe her usual demeanor, and being beautiful doesn't stretch far when you look ready to rip someone's arm off for speaking to you. Still, she is what she is - and she maintains her physical condition as well as a bard tunes their favorite instrument.

Mental characteristics

Intellectual Characteristics

Forbidding · Let’s set one thing straight: Olivia is nobody’s darling. She may be ‘a pretty face,’ but hers is a pretty face colored with seriousness and set in severity. She isn’t soft or demure, she doesn’t flinch or pander, and she certainly doesn’t dally. Olivia’s tough-as-nails approach to life and people can make her hard to befriend—and makes her abrasive sometimes—but honestly, she’s at peace with it. Things are simpler without others getting involved, mucking everything up. It would be fair to say she has something of a shell around her, keeping most at an emotional distance, and trust from her is hard-won. Looking past it, though (or from inside it), it’s clear she’s unfailingly sincere, and though she may not jest, her endless seriousness means she’s also trustworthy.

Intense · Taking a moment to expand on why Olivia seems severe, it’s worth noting she’s also intense. Not dramatic, nor swoon-inducing passionate, but possessed of an all-in sort of ferocity she applies to literally everything. Yes, even opinions. Even emotions, and interactions. Olivia doesn’t do anything by halves. Temperate will never be a good word for her; she burns both brightly and quickly. It does make her hot-headed, yes, but shes’s also bold, and feels deeply and earnestly. So what if her fuse is short? She’s more than honest: she’s genuine. Her unvarnished manner may not be popular, but she’d never hide behind even a proverbial mask; one can be sure she is exactly what she seems. If that means she seems severe and occasionally humorless, so be it. She’s at peace with that too.

Compassionate · Olivia’s prickly exterior and dogged determination to keep others at a distance can make it difficult to see, but her intensity also touches a conscientious, compassionate heart. Combined with her boldness, she makes for a fearless protector, driven by an innate willingness to jump into the thick of things wherever she sees a reason for it. Sometimes, it might mean a call to arms. Others, maybe her time and attention. Whatever the cause, there’s little she wouldn’t give in the service of someone who needs it. She’s seen a lot in life she’d rather hadn’t happened, and helping to make sure it doesn’t again is more than her life’s work: it’s her purpose. So maybe kindness isn’t something others would expect of her, but in her element, helping others, it’s easier to tell her for who she really is: a woman of uncompromising integrity committed to making a difference.

Arrogant · With her lightning fast physical and cognitive reactions, Olivia tends to judge quickly - and often harshly. She's seen enough of the horrors people inflict on each other to assume the worst 99% of the time. Unfortunately, time tends to prove her preconceived notions right, further enforcing her viewpoint that most people are simply morons. As a result, she wears chilly arrogance like a suit of armor, and is intensely resistant to attempts to dismantle it. Calling her out is a surefire way to earn her enmity, and she will make a bold point to humiliate those who try - preferably in an arena where they feel the most comfortable. Pride before the fall, as they say. That the table may someday get turned on her certainly occurs to her, she just doesn't care.

Honest · For someone who seems so adept at pissing everyone off, there is a compelling reason to have her in your corner: her integrity. Olivia has but one master, and that is the truth. This facet of her personality is apparent within moments of speaking to her; she'd truly rather die then lie. Her morals and ethics are ironclad, yielding only to intense pressure from within in the rare times she is forced to re-evaluate a worldview based on new information. Even then, her process is so open and sincere, it's easy to track where her mind is at, and she is terrible at hiding when she is troubled. Still, she's not the type to seek outside help, and prefers to work through internal conflict on her own. For all her honesty, showing vulnerability is anathema to how she defines herself, so she can be ruthless when it comes to her own feelings.

Morality & Philosophy

Humanity may be a complicated species, but Olivia has a firm grasp on the nuances of human behavior, and is seldom surprised by the result of human actions. This innate knowing goes beyond simple empathy - it harkens back to a time when the noble family of House Belmore got there because they truly cared about their holders. Liv can't always explain where this sense of responsibility comes from, but she feels it as deeply as she feels her own heartbeat, and her reaction to encountering those who are the opposite - such as her father - is often intensely negative. Truly, it can be stunning when Liv is in her element helping people - and the less she thinks about it, the better the result. Fulfilling her responsibility to the people of Larane isn't something she is afraid she will fail at; it is a promise she will keep until her last breath.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

Olivia is a stern, controlled creature in many ways - but that is a construct based on surviving in a House where appearance is everything. Given her druthers, Olivia would rather be out exploring the great seas of Eien aboard of the great ships of the Laranian Navy - or better yet, flying with the Gryphons of Icehorne!

Travel and wanderlust is never far from the forefront of her thoughts, though she seldom verbalizes it.
