Amberford

We start our story in the town of Amberford.   Amberford sits on the eastern side of the continent of Egera, the last post of civilization before passing into the ruins and wildlands of Old Garamor.   This is a crossroads town, but the roads it shepherds are little used. Egera’s major cities are further south and west - with the exception of the dwarven stronghold of Everhost in the north - and travel between them is facilitated by the continent’s major waterways. The only people who need to come through Amberford are those traveling by foot, or those mad enough to explore the east. But those who do pass through Amberford will find a well-kept town with a tight-knit community. A community that remains somewhat isolated from the major doings of the world despite their location.   However, you have all come arrived in town during the town’s short tourist season. The annual Craft & Harvest Fest. This is a melding together of human and dwarven autumn holidays that is unique to Amberford. Traditionally, this time of the year is when humans celebrate the harvest of their crops, and dwarves celebrate their new year by showing off the works they’d made during the year past. Harvestfest and Dwarven New Year are officially about a week and a half apart. This just means Amberford gets a week and a half of party. It’s the town’s busiest time of the year, and something of a tourist attraction for those willing to travel so far afield.   You have all come here for a variety of reasons. To enjoy the festival, to show and sell your own wares, maybe just passing through at the right time, and some of you are locals.

Demographics

Amberford's population is primarily human and dwarven, with a minority of elves and kentier.

Government

A mayor is elected every five years with no term limits. They are supported by a council of town elders as well as hired administrative staff.

Defences

Amberford has few defenses and no standing military, only a town militia. Many buildings are made of stone, and some areas are bordered by a low stone wall.

Industry & Trade

Amberford is home to farmers, craftsmen, businessmen, and innkeepers. Nearly every occupation is represented despite the small population. This is because Amberford's culture attracts entrepreneurs.    Every autumn the town hosts a 10 day festival called the Harvest and Crafts Festival that draws people from across Egera to buy and sell their wares. This is by far the height of the business year for everyone in town. The artisans who live in Amberford use this festival to sell their wares but also to advertise their skills to the world at large in the hope of attracting commissions during the rest of the year.

Infrastructure

Amberford's main roads are paved in stone at meet in a large square at the center of town. The stones match those that make up the bridges that cross the river east and south of the city, as they are all mined from the same quarry near the mountains. Some citizens have paved portions of their yards or doorsteps, usually the more wealthy or those who run businesses out of their homes.   There are a few water wheels set up along the river to assist the processing of grain into flour.

History

Amberford is one of the oldest human settlements, despite its size. The road that runs from the Anira Ruins to Everhost dates back to the Pre-Rift era, and ruins of the original Garamoran bridge that crosses the Ambermouth, and the village that surrounded it, can be seen a few miles upriver. During the Rift the Garamoran structures were either destroyed or badly damaged, and the original site of the town was abandoned in favor of its new one. It was likewise renamed at the time.

Geography

Amberford is located in the north-east of Egera gets its name from the Ambermouth River that runs down from the mountains and passes south-east of the town. It also sits on a crossroad for those traveling by land to or from Everhost in any direction.
