The Freemen of Illarah

Some would feel bored, or worse, unprotected in the Freelands. You've lived here all your life, and no bear, or roadside bandit has ever bother you so you know not what they speak of. Life here is all you could ask for; calm and simple. You plow your fields, get your tools repaired by Gerny, and go fishing on the weekends.   Life is good.

Structure

The structure of the Freemen government is somewhat fluid as settlements are left to govern their own. There are only two official positions in these settlements. Firstly is the Councilman, or Councilwoman, selected by vote every 5 years. They are responsible for erecting laws and upholding those laws, as well as Nationwide laws which are few and far between given the nature of the government. Lastly they participate in bi-yearly Council meetings, where new Nationwide laws are voted on and discussed.   The Guard Captain is a position of authority in his Settlement, and is appointed by the Councilman/woman. He is tasked with the logistical side of protecting his citizens, as well as adjudicating civil and lawful disputes.

Public Agenda

To give any man or woman, elf, or dwarf the freedom to worship their God, work their dream job, and build the life they desire, free of transnational matters.

Assets

The Freelands are home to a few Copper mines, namely in MidDale. Small militias formed from its citizens, small ships are constructed in Riverview, and a Fort in Brunswick.

History

The Freemen of Illarah were formed from an Era of peace between the Republic and Imperium. Founded over a process of a 30 year negotiation under the promise of remaining a neutral ground in the affairs between the Republic and the Imperium the Freelands have remained a neutral force in the greater works of local government, and has prospered in its neutral state.

Demography and Population

There are 1,250,000 known citizens of the Freelands, not accounting for those that live in solitude among the wilds. The birth to death ratio is 3:1.

Territories

All lands north of the River Dale and west of the Razorback Peaks belong to the Freemen. Its southern lands were once Imperium territory, and its northern territories were once Republic lands, until they were given independence in 7E 1088 19th of Fleeting where these lands were awarded to them.

Military

The Freemen as a whole have no official standing military. Defense of its lands comes either in the form of Militia Men recruited from towns, or from Imperium mercenaries.

Religion

The Freemen pride themselves on an unrestricted religious standard. All peoples in the Freelands are free to worship whatever they please as long as it does not impede on others' rights.

Foreign Relations

The Freelands share a mutually beneficial relationship with the Republic, though it is not uncommon for the Republic to be short on trade deals, or offer low returns on goods or services. The two countries share open borders and allow travelers to come and go as they please.   The Freelands and the Imperium however share nearly no relationship. On a rare occasion the Imperium trades its weapon surplus to the Freelands, but that is about all the relationship they share. The Freelands have no rivalries with Imperium, and if its' citizens wish to leave the Imperium, the Freelands offers them asylum.

Agriculture & Industry

The Freelands mostly focuses on an agricultural system, backed by its flourishing grain farms, milk and meat production, and its two major fishing towns. It produces very little else in terms of Industry though do not underestimate its people, there is many a talented painter, jeweler, and blacksmith within the Freelands.

Trade & Transport

Most goods are moved by cart or wagon, though sometimes by boat via their two ocean ports. Food and farming tools are the main thing being traded within over Freeland borders, though works of art, pelts and hunting supplies often find themselves within the walls of the occasional trade cart. The trade caravans find little problem getting to most areas of the Freelands, but some prove more challenging than others, such as Old Ashton for example that remains an isolated village and culture.

Education

Most citizens of the Freelands have some basic education taught to them from their parents, many of whom got theirs from their parents. Some have roots in the Imperium where learning is a requirement for the first few years of life, so by bloodline some have better education than others, but most learn from their peers as well. There are schools in some cities and towns of the Freelands, but few and far between as most run on donations alone.

Infrastructure

The infrastructure of the Freelands is probably its weakest trait. While its freedoms are unmatched, it has no standing military, it has but a few stone roads, most of which are dirt that interconnect cities. Only a couple of settlements feature walls. It does however have two decent ports for ocean based exports/imports. Lastly, Towns have a courthouse to uphold law, as well as to act as the center of local government.

Trout from Riverview has also been a large export since the Republic ruined their supply of trout within their borders. Pelts and hunting goods such as bones and hides are often sent to Volwick. Lastly food goods like milk, meats, fish, honey, and most importantly; grain are sent nearly all over Aeroloth, from the southern most point of the Imperium, to the northern most point of the Republic.
Major Imports
The Nation of Illarah is a fairly independent one. It needs little from outside sources. Occasionally it will require new weapons to replace the old, and will conduct business with the Imperium for their higher quality smiths and steel. They will also trade gold for the gems of the Imperium for use in artistic forms such as jewelry crafting, or even just for status.
